The park permit was for sixty-thousand people. They expected about eighty-five to end up coming. At the rally itself, they guessed attendance had reached about 150k.

(A Comedy Central executive joked 'ten or fifteen million'. Stephen Colbert tweeted six billion.)

Today, attendance at the Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear is being generally agreed upon by various news outlets as having exceeded 215,000 people, with some estimating as high as a quarter of a million.

To give you an idea:

And by 'filled' I mean 'crammed shoulder-to-shoulder to the point of total immobility in every direction'.

AmericaBlog's John Aravosis about sums it up:

"In my 25 years in DC, I've been to a lot of the biggest rallies, save the Million Man March and the Pro-Life rallies. I have never, ever, seen anything this big. It was wall to wall people. You couldn't even walk across. It took us half an hour to go across maybe 100 feet. I have never seen anything like this.

That picture, extended down, would be about three screens as long vertically. The open spaces you see in the middle are the barricade of media trucks, first-aid tent, and the DC police's mobile observation tower -- all completely overrun.

Picture from the circling helicopter:

Which should likewise span about three screens to the left.

There weren't enough jumbo-trons or speakers in the area for people to see or hear VIDEO of the stage. People stuck on adjacent streets GAVE UP AND WENT TO BARS TO WATCH IT ON TV.

After the close of the rally, most in attendance decided the best course of action was to join an impromptu parade down Pennsylvania Avenue. In the hours directly preceding and following the rally, DC Transit Authority reports that the metro system was 'overwhelmed' and 'crippled' by the unexpected volume.

This thing was EPIC in scale.

I wanted to go, alas...work. :/

Would've been cool to see Ozzy, though I haven't been a fan of Cat since his statements on Salman.

My History teacher actually took a road-trip to go see it. And he actually offered to take me along, but I had a visit from my beautiful girlfriend that I'm madly in love with, so I stayed and had a even better time here. :)

I watched a bit on TV and it looked great.

I was there, and it was fucking amazing. Can you see the main stage? Can you see the smaller camera stage in front of that? Yeah, I didn't think so. Anyway, we were just slightly behind and to the right of that. We had to get there 4 hours early to get that spot. Totally worth it.

You really don't have any idea just how many people were there if you weren't there. I didn't realize just how many people were there, due to just how many people were there. It was that amazing.

Goddamn, I knew there were a lot of people there (I could even tell just by looking at the audience on TV), but that is just crazy in mass. I'm kinda glad I didn't go, the last thing I would have wanted to do was drive 3 hours in a car over several states just to be in an area where I couldn't hear or see the actual stage.

The television was my friend. I think it would be interesting to see the spike in broadcast numbers for that block on comedy central that day, plus the peaks on the sites where it was livestreamed. A lot more than just a quarter of a million people watched it, I can tell you that much.

I was there, maybe about 500 or so feet from the stage on the northern side of the mall, and when we were waiting for the show to start someone lifted their camera up to see how many people there were and when I saw the picture the only thing I uttered was "Holy shit."

It was a massively fun event..

PhhtHAHAHAHAHAhahahaheheheheee... heheh... heh.

*ahem*

Call me immature, but I can't be the only one to think that looks like a giant, spiky penis being aimed at the Capitol Building.

EDIT: No, apparently I'm not. Thank goodness for that.

Pardon my ignorance, but what was the rally actually for?
Protesting politics? Bringing down Obama? Voting for the Nation's Official best Cookie Recipe?

That's a tremendous amount of people though; I was in DC not all that long ago.

Quoting you to bring attention to the question.
I have no idea what its all about, I could look it up but I figure since there's a thread about it there should be some mention of what it is within said thread.

It was intended to bring a more moderate view to light, as, on the right, we have teapartiers who are attempting to state that if they don't get their way, they'll "exercise their 2nd amendment rights". On the left, we have folks like Keith Olbermann who isn't much better. John Stewart was attempting to just say "Hey, look. This shit ain't cool. It's not fixing anything. Chill out. Times suck, yes, but they're not as bad as you'd think."

hehe, it looks like a wiener :p

OT: Wow, thats intense. So many decent, sane people in one place...

Really makes me happy. I'd have gone, but I had stuff to do. Kind of funny since this rally was apparently for people who had stuff to do and couldn't go to other rally's.
