hello good people,

I have a question regarding RAM. I want to upgrade my current 2 GB to 4GB. I have found a ramkit which is nearly identical to the one I already have, but it seems to run at a different timing. The one I want to buy runs at 5-5-5-18 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000CDLCGG/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_g147_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0F63MT2F91B8MVPD2Y3Q&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128533&pf_rd_i=468294) and the one I have runs at 4-4-4-12. I have a M2N32 SLI-deluxe motherboard. Is it wise to buy this one or will it stop my system form working or something equally bad?

I don't know what the numbers mean, but check the manufacturers website. It should have a list of approved RAM. Look for the code of the one you want, and if its there, it should work. If not, don't risk it, and choose one that is.

if I recall right, you should be able to use them since your mobo will downclock them so they are at the same timings (so both will run in 5-5-5-18).

I see, thanks for the replies. Would it be possible to overclock the sower one so that it runs at the same speed?

I Don't think there's a way to modify the latency speed other than acquiring the same as this is a hardware problem. The mixed latency speeds will configure all of the RAM to the slowest latency.

There's not much difference between 4-4-4-12 and 5-5-5-18 however if you are after performance avoid it at all cost.

You can try changing RAM timings in the bios, but there's no guarantee the new RAM will work on the tighter timings. If it doesn't, you'll have to slow the faster RAM down to meet the timings of the slower (new) RAM. The latter should happen automatically if you just stick the new stuff with the old stuff without manually changing anything in bios.

G'day Yormungandr, would it be possible for you to find out the old ram brand? 4-4-4-12 and 5-5-5-16 are less helpful then 1000MHz, 1333MHz 1600MHz ect.

You can put RAM with different speeds in as long as their the same type (DDR2, DDR3 etc)

HOWEVER, Put the fastest one of the RAM into Slot 1 and 2 (or if you only have 2 slots, slot 1) It;ll say in small writing on the Mobo which Slot Number it is. What this does is it runs them at the speed of Slot 1 (if its lower in slot 2 it'll go to its max). however if the slow one is in Slot 1, then the fast one will be forced to run at the same speed as the slow.

To not confuse you, just buy new RAM with more speed/capacity to avoid this fart-arsing.

It runs at 800MHz, it's a corsair twinx c4 2x 1 GB, is that enough info?

Haha, surprisingly, no unfortunately. The closest guess I can make with the information so far, could they possibly be the same as these ones?

They don't look the same... The outward appearance is exactly the same as the RAM I posted, only the timings are different, that's why I'm confused. They seem the same, except for the timings.
