Every time people talk about representations of gender, race, sexuality, etc. in media it's always so negative. It doesn't have to be if only we talked about the occasional step fowards we make as well. So I've decided to do that here. I want to start a list of examples of progressiveness in recent media, whether big or small.
Remember: this list has nothing to do with your opinions on the media itself. We're not saying being progressive makes a movie or a show better, nor are we saying that they suck if they're not doing something progressive.
Here are 4 examples to start(anyone knows how to make bullet points here?)
In the movie Dredd, from last year, the villian, Dredd's partner, and a minor character who is Chief Judge(and thus, Dredd's superior) all happen to be female. The fact that they're female is never brought up or ever important in the movie.
In Paranorman, a movie from last year, one of the characters was revealed to be gay by the end of the film, making him possibly the first openly gay character in a mainstream kid's animated movie.
The Legend of Korra, one of the most popular animated shows on right now, has a non-white female protagonist.
Community, Parks and Recreation, and Archer all comedies in which only 2 or three of the main cast are white males.(Main cast here meaning those who are credited in the opening theme)
