Actually you know what people who think that any form of harassment should be dealt with by telling the VICTIM to "suck it up" need to all die in a fire.

Yeah.
I was with you until here.

The fact is, verbal harassment isn't going to stop. Ever. Unless humans fire so many nuclear weapons that every single one of us is wiped off the planet, people will continue to say mean things to each other and a thick skin is really the only way to deal with it.

OT:
I dislike it when people get all up in arms about a phrase because the precise meaning isn't what is meant.

Like the whole "Lost faith in humanity" thing. 99% of the time, that isn't meant literally. It's just a phrase meant to indicate someone saw someone else do something incredibly stupid or evil.

"It is just a theory." If you are discussing anything scientific and utter that phrase, stop and go learn what the scientific definition of "theory" is. It doesn't mean "a guess". Yes, there is a theory of evolution. There is also a theory of gravity. The "theory" is explaining the reason why something happens. The fact that it happens at all isn't up for debate.
Actually, a theory isn't saying that "This did happen like this", a theory is saying, "We have evidence that supports this theory, but we cannot list it as a fact".

To use your example of gravity... there is both a law and a theory of gravity. The law of gravity tells us that between two objects of mass, they will be brought together through gravity through a certain known equation.

The theory of gravity is still up in the air. We can calculate gravity yes, but WHY does mass attract itself and cause gravitational pull?

So pretty much, theory =/= law. A theory does have evidence supporting it, but it IS NOT proven.
I never said the theory itself was proven. Just that a theory is about something that we already know for a fact happens. We could find out that evolution or gravity as we understand them are wrong tomorrow. But all that will change is our understanding of how it works, not that it happens. That things evolve or that gravity exists isn't debatable. We can debate the 'how's and 'why's of it, but the actual happening? No. So when people say "evolution is just a theory", they're wrong.
Ahhhhhhh, ok. I understand your reasoning now. Your right, we do know that evolution through science, so that is true. The only reason the Theory of Human Evolution is still a theory is that scientist have evidence that it happened, which supports a theory, but haven't 'proven' that the model they use is 100% correct.

Sorry I called you out on it though, a lot of this site seems to have a skewed look on what a theory actually is, with so freakin many of them saying that theory = law.

"X is just a theory" and its cousin "Yah, but there are people that believe y."
It's just such a GREAT AND WONDERFUL lack of understanding about model-based science and the difference between peer review and a nutbag with a sandwich board screaming on the streets.
I always respond with "yep. Just like the germ theory, or the sperm theory, or the round earth theory, or the heliocentric theory, or relativity..." once I had someone tell me the sperm theory wasn't a theory, because it had been proven. I have never wanted to reach through the internet to slap someone so badly.

Petty example, but...

"Deergh, the Indiana fridge scene was ridiculous! He couldn't have survived that, it'd be impossible! That film was shit and ruined my memory of the real ones!"

Well, obviously. But it's equally ridiculous to survive hopping out of a plane aboard a life raft and skiing it down the Himalayas. And all the other improbable nonsense Indie's been through for the sake of adventure.

And another one.

"Everyone knows the moon landing is fake! Look at the evidence, man!"

Well, I have. Don't take my word for it, there are people with some real qualifications that could explain that. Unless they're conveniently part of the conspiracy. It's a bit odd that the Soviet Union, the rival who would have everything to gain from exposing the moon landing as WestBlock propaganda didn't object, isn't it?

[Pardon the strawmen.]

'Being polite is part of your job'

No, its not, its just plain manners/being a decent human being. Just because my job is to help you doesn't mean you get the right to treat me like shit ¬¬

And one thats gaming related, people who take personal preference as a quality proof in console wars

'I don't use x so that doesn't count'
'Who plays shitty games like Ratchet and Clank'
'I play cod and xbox gets dlc earlier so obviously that makes the entire console better'

I don't get involved in Console wars but when I see stuff like this It just makes me blood boil. People really need to know the difference between opinion and fact.

"X is what's wrong with the world today"

Or anything in the vein of summing up one or more phenomenons (be they real or imagined) as indicative of cultural decline.

"Kids spend too much time with computers and phones and tv's, that's what's wrong with this generation!"
"People don't want to work for their pay, they just want handouts, that's what's wrong with America!"
"Food companies keep using GMO's, that's why everyone's so unhealthy!"

It's the lack of context or any real thought put into these statements that bug me so much. This isn't something someone says after thinking about an issue, discussing it with others, and reflecting on evidence. This is what someone says when they have next to no understanding of a topic and just go with gut feelings and preconceived beliefs, regardless of whether or not they reflect reality. See also; the Dunning-Kruger effect.

It pisses me off most when these kinds of statements are used for political purpose or support some kind of societal movement. Trying to white-wash topics and make the entire world fit neatly into a little package so you don't have to do anything scary like introspection or self-critique is the exact opposite of learning.

Natural gas and fracking are fantastic solutions to improve our economy. Their extensive use across the country and the planet has no long-term consequences whatsoever.
Is it fair to call a difference in political opinion BS? It looks to me like fracking would help improve your economy.
The statement that it has no long-term consequences is not a matter of opinion, but is a testable claim, and if it is a false claim, then it's BS.

On that note, I guess the way people confuse opinions and facts, or political and scientific controversies, is pretty annoying. For example, climate change and evolution are treated as controversial topics. Among scientists, they are not controversial. The controversy exists solely within political, industrial, media, and religious contexts.

When people say that the harassment a girl suffers from the (generally male) gaming community just needs to be "taken" and that we need to "grow a spine" and "accept that it happens".

These people need to die in a fire.

Literally die a in fire.

Yeah.
I get quite miffed when people say this. It's just obnoxious.

There are people who think things break by themselves through regular use and that it's nobody's fault, and people who think that the person using it when it breaks broke it even when using it normally. I subscribe to the former, and the latter annoys me, but I get fucking infuriated when someone chops and changes depending on whether they want to blame someone or divert blame. If you're going to give me shit for breaking something because of wear and tear because I was using it, you take the fucking blame when something breaks while you use it.

I find it frustrating that literally nobody knows how to use the word "literally" correctly.

See what I did there? Total misuse of the word, and I get so sick of hearing people say "literally" when I doubt they have any grasp on what the word actually means.
Literally; adverb

2. Used to acknowledge that something is not literally true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling.

Don't be "that guy".

OT: (reads insane story)

"I bet the guy was a (insert subgroup of people here)"

or

"I bet the guy was from (insert place here)"

Guys, people's morals and actions aren't brought by anything except themselves. Stop trying to simplify humanity.

I'd say the people who jump in every time there is a discussion about religion and immediately post something along the lines of laughing at people for believing the religion without adding any discussion value to support or contradict it.

"Sheep" or "Sheeple". I only bring this up now because I saw it in the latest ZP thread. It's the most annoying and pretentious thing you can possibly say. You'd have to be pretty god damn full of yourself to think you're some unique snowflake out of the billions of people on earth.

Throughout all of human civilization and/or the Bible, marriage has always been one man and one woman.

Evolution is just a theory.

Pretty much any gripe that involves people wishing to live in the "good old days". Given a time machine and the ability to take a one way trip to any point in time, I'd pick about a week ago as the farthest point back.

The new term that seems to have dominated the hippie/health nut nomenclature, 'Organic'. Organic means carbon based or a compound with a carbon skeleton. This includes synthetic & man made compounds. It does not mean all natural & healthy.

I read an article about some health nut taking a restaurant to court for serving a mean claimed to be organic but she claimed was partially organic. There IS no partially organic. Her gripe was that pesticides were used on the lettuce prior to harvesting. Pesticides ARE organic because they're carbon based compounds.

If you think this could not get any more rediculous, we have a brand of bottled water called organic water. The only thing organic about water is the plastic bottle its sold in.

Oh & the other thing that bugs me is the overuse of the term racist. Movie bob is one of the biggest offenders with this. Racism has been the cause of much death, suffering & inhumane treatment of other people on earth. It is not something I think that should be lightly compared to actors playing different racial roles with funny hats or for people who disagree with a black guy playing a white guy role due to loyalty to the original source material. The same goes for words like sexist & homophobe also. These can be serious accusations & can be just as dangerous as calling someone a nazi, rapist or peadophile out of context.

That one bugs me too actually. People talk about Mac vs PC when Macs are PCs unless Macs have somehow become impersonal when I wasn't looking which wouldn't be good for sales.

My Mac is a statement of functionality, not fashion. If you buy a thing for a status change you are an idiot.

Not that you are. Now it sounds like a passive aggressive argument, we should stop.

Lack of proper punctuation, spelling, grammar; yes I'm a bit of a grammar Nazi.

People who say "I could care less," when really they mean "I couldn't care less."

People who say "It was fatal," when the accident wasn't fatal hence the victim is still alive i.e. walking around and not dead which is what fatal means.

People that confuse poisonous and venomous; if it's poisonous then you'll most likely die if you eat it but not if it bites you, if it's venomous then you'll most likely die if it bites/stings you and not if you eat it, and of course if it's both poisonous and venomous then you'll most likely die either way.

"Young people are what's wrong with the world," news flash Cato the Elder was decrying the youth of Rome over 2000 years ago and blamed them for the decline of the Republic, hence I've started to realize that it's just old people in general moaning and complaining.

"All people on benefits are scroungers," err no they're not in fact the number of people committing benefit fraud to the people on benefits is miniscule, in fact if I remember correctly it's like 5% - I bet the real term figures for tax avoidance and evasion is much higher and substantially more costly.

"Video games cause violence," do I even need to explain that one?

"Video games are for kids, you know that right? Why are you still playing them?" Most games are aimed at teens or adults and as an adult I can do whatever I want as long as it's within the law and not hurting someone else.
