This caught me a bit off-guard.

A Jay-Z song?

This is almost as random as that trailer for Black Ops with the Eminem song in the background.
It just doesn't feel like this song goes along with the trailer at all.

I'm not a rap-hater, I've got a few songs by Jay-Z that I like. But c'mon. What's up with all these FPS ads with random rap in the background. They could have chose something better than,

"I GOT 99 PROBLEMS, BUT A ***** AINT ONE."

Are they trying to appeal to the hardcore hip-hop fanbase?

For one, this a TV add, so it must hit to the majority.

And "99 problems but a ***** ain't one"

The "*****" is some weak-sauce game that has been comming out every year with 2 different weapons and some maps for 60 bucks.

Well, it's about as fitting as the horrible electro shit they have in every other trailer.

Yeah, I remember that, it was just bizarre. And the footage was really poorly edited too, it didn't do the game any favours at all.

When I caught it on Tv one evening the word "*****" had been blanked out of it and the entire advert just felt weird watching it at that point.

Because battlefield is copying activisions use of Eminem in CoD. MW2's use of a rap song was much more fitting i thought.

I feel retarded for just now catching onto that.

Clearly Battlefield must be a game for cool and hip people.

While I'm not biased in the whole CoD/BF war going on (Even though I'm a huge fan of BF1942), it seems like BF3 might be a tad overhyped. It's so confident that it's going to kick CoD's ass at everything... While I'm 75% sure that it might, if this game flops, I'm sure EA would feel pretty dumb.

We already discussed this awhile back. It's basically a subtle (ok not that subtle) dig at Call of Duty.

The Assassin's Creed trailer was incredible, probably helped a lot by the music!

Wait... you were talking about Assassin's Creed with this, right?

Ea have a knack for silly advertising with out of place in my opinion stupid music that seems intent on targeting the lowest common denominator. Anyone remember the 'this is the new shit' ads for Dragon Age Origins. Eug.

Maybe they're trying to imply that the game is going to be released with 99 bugs?
I was going to say that! That's all I can make of it. The song doesn't fit and it's edited on tv so it makes it worse. "I got 99 problems but a...ain't one! Hit me!"

While definitely a jab at CoD, I think they are just smart. A shitload of people like Jay-Z and they're probably hoping to get some of those people to buy their game.

I thought it was great. Fit well in my opinion. It's better than a rock track, or as another poster said, an electronic track.

EDIT: (In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not buying this game nor have I ever bought a Battlefield game, I've only bought one of the CoD games, MW1, because I heard the Campaign was worth a play through, and I'm not fussed either way by Jay-Z or his music.)

I think I may be the Audience they're trying to capture? Someone who had no intention of buying this game.

I dunno, I like rap music and I think the song fits about as well as any other song would. Certainly just as well as a rock song, or some equivalent.

They're having fun with that aren't they? So they're making fun of the use of the Eminem rap right? The fact it felt really out of place too?

Different songs for different settings. I can feel a rap song fitting in with some sort of "to the streets" thing, but it never really seems to work with guys in uniforms.
