So I was playing persona 3 fes and I left it idle for a minute and I got attacked while no shadows that usually show up were on the map. Does anyone know what it was? It killed my party in one hit.

Probably this guy. He'll drop in and kick your ass if you linger on a floor for too long.

It was Death. :D

I believe you can beat him late-game once you're all super-powered, but yeah, he'll chase after and destroy you if you hang around floors long enough, and there are certain circumstances that make him spawn faster such as a floor without any normal shadows running around.

When Death rolls around, you'll usually get the warning from Mitsuru or Fuuka that you better get the hell off that floor, and when it actually spawns, I believe, you'll also hear a sound warning, I think it was rattling chains or something of the like.

As said, no shadows, or only red shadows, or only golden shadows, or even more shadows than usual, usually means Death will be quite quick to the party. Again, you get a warning from your support when you enter such a floor.

I suppose it's a bit of an anti-grind feature.

If someone mentions death, get your ass out of there or you will die.

The first time I heard Fuuka go "I have a feeling death is near." I freaked out, ran out of tartarus and sent my character to bed. One of my friends had to tell me what it was because I was just like NOOOPE when I heard it and ran.

It was Death/The Grim Reaper, silly.

He appears if you stay too long on one floor.

The larger the floor, the more time you have before he appears. You know he's on the floor when you hear chains rattling in the distance. That sound alone would make any sane man shit their pants.

I wouldn't suggest taking him on until you reach level 80 or so.

It's probably Death. He's freaking powerful, man. Don't mess with him until late, LATE game and you know exactly what you're doing and have some REALLY good personae. He'll kick your ass otherwise.

Death (or The Reaper) appears when you spend too long on one floor. Your navigator will give you a warning when he appears and you'll hear chains rattling in the background. When this happens, RUN THE HELL AWAY. Get out of there immediately.

The first time I met him I was so scared haha! To the point I didn't wanna explore dungeons for 2-3 days. He's there to prevent you from over-grinding.
When you're finally toe-to-toe with him, try not to use reflect magics skill.

I am playing FeMC in P3P. I heard that Igor's Assistant is the hardest boss in the game? Is Death the second hardest then?
Igor's assistants are, indeed, the hardest bosses in Persona 3 and 4. They are the ultimate test of skill. But Persona 3's version of the secret final boss (Elizabeth/Theodore) is much harder than 4's because it requires you to fight without any of your party. So you gotta be over-powered as fuck and have the best personas and items.

And yes, Death is second hardest, with the real final boss falling into third.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the assistant battles are completely optional. You don't need to fight them in order to get the full experience. They're mainly for bragging rights, much like Baal in Disgaea.

Yes . Elizabeth is the hardest boss in any game periode . You go up against he 1 on 1 and if i remember correctly , if you have any imunities she'll instakill you . Death is freaking hard if you don't know what you'r doing , he's the second hardest boss and only shows up if you are idle too long on the same floor . Not so much as an anti-grining mechanic ( because seriously who spends THAT much time on a floor if they aren't idle or actively seeking him out?) . Totally worth it bragging rights .

On an unrelated note . I picked Elizibeth as my main in Persona 4 Arena because she's all kind of awsome .
