Ok, So I grabbed a copy of Dead Space 2 and wanted to play it online. Well guess what? If you don't buy it brand new you have to pay 800 Microsoft points to play online. I mean WOW, seriously? If I don't buy the game new it locks out part of the content.

Wow that crosses the line for me. Some crappy skin or something fine, but to lock out multiplayer...

Thats just wrong

EDIT: The point isn't that the multiplayer is awesome, it's the principle of it. I bought a game, I would like to play all the features on the Disc. This seems like the start of something much bigger, are they going to try and lock out the last boss fight unless you pay up? Where does it stop? I also feel like it hurts the multi-player community.

If the place you grabbed it from didn't tell you you couldn't play multiplayer, I would look into returning it or getting multiplayer enabled by them.

Really?
I bought mine about a month ago, and I didn't have to pay anything to go online.
Unless they did something in that gap between me buying it and you buying it.

That is called EA's Project 10$.......
the multiplayer is fun but its not worth 800 MsP. So the next time you buy a game published by EA or ubisoft buy it new

Go back to the shop and demand a code for online play. then return to EA website and post up that you gained an MP code for your pre-owned copy.

This is the kind of shit that will ruin gaming for a lot of people. We have to get all "Fight the power" on their ass's.

Or not at all.

I'll get Dead Space 2 when it's cheap in a Steam sale myself, it looks like an OK game but not something i'd spend all my money on.

And I mean all my money, I live off my ALG.

I just think it's crap. Whoever bought the game originally isn't playing it anymore, I'm not a pirate, it's just money grabbing. It also hurts the mulitplayer community for that game. It's just plain bad.

Imagine if COD did that jesus.

So you're ok with the shop getting all the money while Visceral Games get nothing?

Their theory is that, since they get absolutely no money from your pre-owned purchase, at least they can get $10 out of you for the multiplayer (which I assume is an ongoing cost for them, with maintenance and what not). So in a way it's kinda understandable, cause this way they at least get a little bit of revenue for the game you bought, but it's still a pain, and completely unappealing. A lot of other games use this, and have been for the past year and a half, so I doubt it'll be going anywhere any time soon. So buy smart: wait till the new copy goes on sale and grab it then. Often the pre-owned difference in price is minimal anyway.

It's a solid business decision, and they need to make money off pre-owned games somehow, so I agree 100% with it.

If you were to buy a second-hand book, would you make sure to send $10 to the original publisher?

...

OT: Don't worry, the online is pretty crappy. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Did you buy it used off of Gamestop, or something.
Correct me if I'm wrong....but EA isn't actually getting ANY of the money you paid for your copy. So, I don't see why they are to blame. They are merely asking money for they're product.

They already got the money from the first person who bought it. It's not like they made an illegal copy, the person got tired of the game, sold it for an inferior price and another person gets the game (also for an inferior price).

The real problem is how expensive games are and how retail stores try to make too much profit from pre-owned games (selling a pre-owned game only 10? cheaper than a new one is preposterous).

Solution: either make new games cheaper, or give them more replay value so people don't sell it in the first week.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret: Visceral still gets nothing. They've already been paid. Part of that $10 goes to MS and all the rest goes to the executives at EA.

I love the game to death but the online is nothing special. They may improve it with time though. But I'm pretty sure theres a short trial that you do for online.
