It's quite simple, if you are a vocalist in any fashion speak up and tell us two things. First, tell us what you participate in with your vocal talents (choir, band, ect). Secondly, tell us what inspired you to start singing.

I'll start.
I sing bass section in my school choir (baritone in babershop). My inspiration for involving myself as a vocalist might just boil down to it being the cheapest instrument I have access too, as well as the one I can handle the easiest.

I was a tenor in church choir (as a younger lad) because my mother made me.
Bass and Bass Baritone in high school choir much to the chagrin of the rest of the football team because by than I liked it.

I've been in ska, old school punk (think black flag), and a fake power metal band.

Ummm well, I think the only reason I do this is because I'm usually the least shy person in the band. I almost always end up playing bass as well as singing.

The world needs more vocalists, me and a few friends are in a band...but none of us can sing well enough to actually record songs. We're still looking for someone. I think I'm probably the best singer out of the three of us though(still not good but not terrible at some stuff).

Hell this can become a sort of vocalist hiring section too. I'd be glad to help out Sightless, but unless you live on the west coast I think we're both a bit out of luck. If you do though tell me more about the genre and such! To respond to Berethond, don't hate the player baby.

I sing my girlfriend to sleep.

I used to be the vocalist in a band whenever the bass sections were easy enough on my concentration to allow it.

I used to be in a children's choir as a kid, and played Mr Bumble in a musical play of Oliver in Elementary school

that's pretty much my CV for vocalist.

That doesn't make any sense.
Let me rephrase, don't hate what you don't have.
...
Vocalists are still overrated.
Well I'll give you an inch by saying that a good vocalist with crappy instrumentals still makes a crappy band. Vocals are still the most prominent and noticable force in almost every band that involves them though. So good instruments with bad vocals do equal a bad band since most won't be able to ignore the vocals enough to enjoy the instruments.

I sang tenor in choir once in awhile. I generally like to sing in the car and I try whatever genre I can. Anything from metal to indie rock.

Or just kick the vocals to the curb together, they're pretty much unnecessary.

Well since I've basically trained in musicals and pseudo-opera styles, which means singing with incredibly powerful voice, it's fun to sing out while walking down the street. Sometimes I can project my voice all the way down the block, it's fun to watch people stare while I sing Avenue Q (I like doing Princeton's parts).

On good days I can sing and have it sound average. I'm a guitarist though. I've been in bands that seriously could not find vocalists. It's definitely the position that most people would consider to be the most "embarrassing" so if you can find a good vocalist you're lucky. That doesn't mean they're by any stretch of the imagination the most talented or important part of the band, they're just the rarest.

Well something's rarity tends to equate into its value though. Since vocals require both a good natural singing voice and, if you want to sound any good, hours upon hours of training, it is rather hard to get good vocals. In terms of talent they actually tend to be the least talented part in most bands since some singers don't seem to think that they need to train their voice or take care of it like you would an instrument.

I agree completely. Having said that, I sing and write songs...
Overatted, yes, incredibly important for most genres, also yes.

I'm a decent baritone, but I can stretch my voice to tenor. All I know is that if I know the tune, I will likely not screw it up.

Baritones have the most important job in most singing groups, to be absolutely invisible, heh. It's actually a lot harder than it sounds for those who've never sang babershop.

hah.

I wish I was that talented.

I tell people I can sing metal and 9 out of 10 they don't believe me till I do a cover voice over. I've managed to do the vocals of Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), that guy from Korn and a few others. I'd love to try it with an actual band but I would also settle for doing something more... subtle.

take for example this guy:
