I remember from being in theme parks that they seem to count the "4th" D as a type of interaction. For example, I believe the Shrek ride was "4D". It was presented in 3D and mechanical elements were used to make things happen to the viewer, for example if a horse is running along a cobblestone road and the viewer is meant to be in a trailer the seats bounce around.

As for cinemas saying 5D or what have you, it's mostly just a marketing ploy

Guys, the 4th dimension is NOT TIME.
The 4th dimension cannot be truly represented via the visual dimensions (the 3 we have, height, width, and depth), and the closest we got was a tesseract:

4D in movies is where they put the 'senses', short of pain, into the theatre itself, so, if the character was falling, they would have fans on the floor blasting air upwards, or if they got sprayed with water, a fine mist would descend on the crowd, and it doesn't require 3D to work.
5D, on the other hand, is still unknown in any facet of existence.

Yeah, after 3D, things just become silly. You can technically say it's 4D, what with 4D being time, but not if you make us wear those annoying glasses. 5D is alternate timelines, right? 6D is what, traveling between alternate timelines? You can't say a movie is that. You're right. We should boycott any movie claiming to be above 3D.
