Rate The Song Above You

Just because I love to discuss music and talk about it on these here boards, I decided to copy an idea from another board and bring it here.

The idea is to post the URL link to YouTube video or MySpace account containing a song you wish for your fellow Escapists to hear. Then the next person replies, rates the song (scale of 1-10), discusses why they gave that rating (and I do mean discuss, don't just say "It sucked, 1/10") and then post their own video to be commented upon and rated. I will be making another thread for "metal" so we can keep the metalheads from clashing with everyone else.

So to get things started, I'll post my first link.

I'm a big fan of heavy instrumental overlay. This was a cool song to listen to, even if it's really not my genre or taste. It's well written (which is indeed a compliment) and I appreciate it, though I've heard heard the classical metal genre is being a bit overused, I don't let that damper my judgement.

I know people moan and groan that Bright Eyes is emo. Sure it is, sometimes. Though the man can't sing too well, Conor is one of my favorite lyricists because of his grasp on writing, rhyme, symbolism and proper flow.

I really like indie style music, and I actually liked this song. Real folky. I've never been a big fan of Bright Eyes, but it was nice. 8/10.

The original and best version of the song. Also neat little Cowboy Bebop AMV to go with it.

Path - Apocalyptica: I sense a bit of metal influence here, but good music is good music. ;-) I like the somber mood of this tune, but as an instrumental it's just a little too simplistic. There's not much to discover after subsequent listens. 6/10

I Believe In Symmetry - Bright Eyes: The lyrics are pretty awesome and easy to appreciate with the music taking a backstage to the message being conveyed. However, the song itself doesn't float my boat enough, but I sense that it could grow on a listener quite easily. 7/10

LORD KRUNK REVIEWS: I Believe in Symmetry - by Bright Eyes.

The song, as a whole, is pretty emo.

I agree entirely that this Conor guy can't sing, but I have to disagree about his lyrics flowing. To me, it was halfway from smooth to disjointed. Writing was a different story; while depressingly strange, it had me listening. The words were also understandable, a feature that is hard to find in most music nowadays.

Not my cup of tea, but I was able to listen to it without switching it off, so 6/10 for me.

The Real Thing by Russell Morris. Australian psychadelic 60's rock FTW!

EDIT: I featured this song in particular because of the kickass piano riff in the second half.

Bob dylan is classic. Conor has been compared to him on several occasions over the interwebs. I'm glad you enjoy the song. It's off an album that was focused more on a electronic sounds entitled "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn". While simultaneously he released "I'm wide awake It's Morning" which was an album focused strongly on acoustic and folksy songs. As for Dylan, can't give a classic anything less than a 10/10.

I can't deny it's emo. A lot of it is. But at least it's not the "whole wrist-cutting crawling in my skin emo".

On subject matter I agree with you; the topics in most songs tend to vary. Personally I enjoy the flow of the words with the music. But that's me.

As for "The Real Thing", I like. 8/10

I'll agree with that statement I suppose. It is only my first time hearing it but I really enjoyed it. I could see myself pursuing it outside this thread. A little backstory behind it would be nice. I tend to enjoy songs where the bassist sounds like he's breaking a sweat. In my eyes, it's a very underrated instrument and can change the whole mood of a song.

Not something I would really seek out to listen to, but it was a nice, relaxing song. I listened to it all the way through and thought it was alright.

LORD KRUNK REVIEWS: "Happy Hollow"? You didn't give much detail there.

Instrumentally, this song is amazing. It has an awesome beat, is catchy and is incredibly well paced and written.

I do however, have two problems: I don't really understand the lyrics, and the bits where his voice goes high-pitched and chanty sounds like a real blemish in what is otherwise an awesome song. A lyricless version of this song would be a delight to my ears.

8/10 for me. I will also thank you for introducing me to this song.

Hmmm... 7/10. Listening to it, the song just seemed a lot longer than it really was, not necessarily in a good way. Almost like the band had three different songs they wanted to string together. However, the guitar playing was very interesting, and I rather enjoyed the end. Side note, I don't really care for people who sing with the punk-styled voice which this band's singer employs but that's just me.
