So my computer has been slowing down recently, so I went to re-install Windows. Problem is my laptop did not come with a Windows 7 Disk. Do they actually expect me to buy another copy of windows 7? Or am I missing something here?
This is true, it's all about the license key, where the software comes from (so long as it isn't cracked) is of little consequence.Matthew94 said:Seeing as he has a CD key it's perfectly legal, cracking it after installation is illegal.mad825 said:...That or do it the legal way.
You should be able to buy recovery discs from your manufacture which will restore the system to it's factory settings. Making a system image when you first bought the laptop would've saved you some time.
It's more about how the software is obtained.Matthew94 said:Seeing as he has a CD key it's perfectly legal, cracking it after installation is illegal.mad825 said:...That or do it the legal way.

It's 100% legal. I did it at my old job as not every customer had a Disk or lost their disk from Windows 7 all the way back to 95. Always handy to have backup discs. If they didnt have a key, we told them straight up "unless you can find it, you'll have to buy a new copy. We wont put a cracked OS on your machine". Even got the go-ahead from Microsoft themselves about it.mad825 said:It's more about how the software is obtained.Matthew94 said:Seeing as he has a CD key it's perfectly legal, cracking it after installation is illegal.mad825 said:...That or do it the legal way.

ugh, not a debate.Matthew94 said:It really isn't, the software is useless without a valid CD key. He could download 1000 ISOs of W7 and it wouldn't matter unless he had a valid cd key.mad825 said:It's more about how the software is obtained.Matthew94 said:Seeing as he has a CD key it's perfectly legal, cracking it after installation is illegal.mad825 said:...That or do it the legal way.

It's not a debate, you're simply wrong. It is perfectly legal to download a copy of Windows 7 and to use it to install the OS. For some reason people seem to be daft enough to think that just because piece of software that costs money is downloaded from the internet it must be illegal to do so; registration is done through keys for reason. Problems arise when you either share your key with people you're not allowed to share it with, or you modify the files ("cracking" them). Downloading a copy of Windows is neither of these.mad825 said:ugh, not a debate.
The only "loop hole" would be DDL.
