So my computer has been slowing down recently, so I went to re-install Windows. Problem is my laptop did not come with a Windows 7 Disk. Do they actually expect me to buy another copy of windows 7? Or am I missing something here?

...That or do it the legal way.

You should be able to buy recovery discs from your manufacture which will restore the system to it's factory settings. Making a system image when you first bought the laptop would've saved you some time.

Seeing as he has a CD key it's perfectly legal, cracking it after installation is illegal.
This is true, it's all about the license key, where the software comes from (so long as it isn't cracked) is of little consequence.

It's more about how the software is obtained.

It's 100% legal. I did it at my old job as not every customer had a Disk or lost their disk from Windows 7 all the way back to 95. Always handy to have backup discs. If they didnt have a key, we told them straight up "unless you can find it, you'll have to buy a new copy. We wont put a cracked OS on your machine". Even got the go-ahead from Microsoft themselves about it.

.....not that it stopped me cracking my personal machine but I digress.

It really isn't, the software is useless without a valid CD key. He could download 1000 ISOs of W7 and it wouldn't matter unless he had a valid cd key.
ugh, not a debate.

The only "loop hole" would be DDL.

Check if there a backup system image somewhere on your laptop. The last two laptops I bought came with one in one place or another(thought it was probably because neither of them had a DVD drive), if that's so. Just restore it.

It's not a debate, you're simply wrong. It is perfectly legal to download a copy of Windows 7 and to use it to install the OS. For some reason people seem to be daft enough to think that just because piece of software that costs money is downloaded from the internet it must be illegal to do so; registration is done through keys for reason. Problems arise when you either share your key with people you're not allowed to share it with, or you modify the files ("cracking" them). Downloading a copy of Windows is neither of these.

Really?...Ok then.

The Digital Millenium Copyright Act(DMCA) and Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (for those in the UK) states in a nut shell, The distribution of copyrighted materials without permission (over the internet) can be a violation of the law

Downloading any software, picture audio and anything else that is copyrighted without the permission of the copyright holder or not under the Fair Usage policy (Copyleft) is illegal under the DMCA.

Window's Operating System is copyrighted material

You can Make a copy of the original software for personal usage only
You cannot download copyrighted material without permission.

"sharing your key with other people" (pass the number of permitted licenses) and "modifying the files" (bypassing DRM) are separate points within the DMCA. And if you still don't get it,here's a copy of an DMCA infringement complaint notice [http://chillingeffects.org/N/71478] that Microsoft sent to Google complaining to them about links to copyrighted material.

Check, your turn.
