This article had me thinking aboutgames with a sad ending. I could only think of three: Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater.

All three had endings where seemingly simple story evolved into something deeper as it progressed. And all three endings were terrific. I very much enjoyed them, and I consider MGS 1 & 3 to have the most masterful ending in the history of video games.

MGS1 had the heroic Solid Snake, an emotionless soldier who mournes Meryl, the woman he sacrifised as he gave into torture. (Yes, I pussied out with Ocelot, but my hand was just SO tired! D:)

MGS3 had an American woman who spied on Russia, and whose final mission was to be killed to clear the name of her country. Russia would remember her as a war criminal who unleashed a nuclear catastrophy. And in America, a dispicable traitor.

What sad endings do you remember? How did it make you feel?

OK, this isn't technically the ending, but it's right before the end, plus Shadow of the Colossus is depressing enough. Anyway, anyone remember when this happened:

The end of Robotech: Battlecry

You have just defeated the Rogue Zentradi Leader, but you were (Hyperspace) Folded out beyond the orbit of pluto (Or somewhere equally or more distant). He concludes that this is the end of his story (He narrates as the story progresses), while he sits in his damaged veritech and suffocates to death. as a final show of his loyalty (To be seen by anyone who finds his corpse), he draws the Robotech Defence Force Emblem on the freezing canopy of his fighter.

I'll Try to find a picture.

I know it's not the saddest ending, but it's all I can think of right now.

Final Fantasy 7 doesn't have a sad ending but it sure is bittersweet. I don't think that counts but it deserves mentioning.

As a player of visual novels, it's easier counting the endings that don't go bad.

Hell, out of the nine endings of Tsukihime alone, three are incredibly sad, one is flat-out depressing, two are slightly bittersweet, and one is happy, but questionable. Only two endings are absolutely, unambiguously happy.

And that's not counting all the times it's possible for you to get actual Bad Ends. Hell, in Fate/Stay Night, they rewarded you for finding all 40 of the bad endings, which ranged from the mildly uncomfortable to the downright scarring.

The end of MGS3 made me tear up. Most beautiful ending to a game I have ever played.

Well I didn't tear up I just...had something in my eye...right as
Big Boss gives Boss the final salute at her anonymous grave, such a sad scene. Actually, the entire "You've got to kill her yourself" Aspect of the game was pretty emotional.

Tetris has a sad ending. Unless you beat it.
Lol!

Anyways, I can't think of (or remember) a real "sad" ending from a videogame. However, Gran Torino's ending made me cry. Even though it was somewhat predictable, it was shot brilliantly.

Call of Duty 4 had a pretty sad ending. And none of the endings of Silent Hill 2 were happy endings if you think them all through.

Got to go with CoD 4.

From what I remember the ending of Shadow of the Colossus that everyone is referring to turned out like this, kinda:
The horse falls of the natural bridge thing, yes, but it comes back in the ending cinematic/after the credits with a limp/hurt leg.

Saddest ending in a game so far is probably... hmm. Yeah why not go with Half-life 2's ending?
