I hate books. Fuck them. The only reading I like comes from the internet and video game subtitles.
Why do you not like books? If you can give a me a genuine answer and explain exactly why I will give you ten dollars.
Because staring at black text on white paper makes my head ache.

Genuine answer-- where's my ten dollars?

I love older books because the pages yellow. Making it nice and easy on the eyes. Bright paper always gives me a headache. But that's probably because I read crazy amounts.

Reading- Easier to find better stories and I never end up stressed about a book, or get addicted to it... at least not in a way that I've wasted 600 hours of my life...blasted Animal Crossing...

Very nice. I have a copy of one of those illustrated bibles for kids and it's ancient. I'm not religious or anything, quite the opposite in fact but it just gives off such a warm vibe. in the back there's a drawing of Bethlehem and Jesus as he walks towards it and one kid has drawn lines on it like he/she was solving a maze.

LOL. I am currently re-reading Azure Bonds from the FR novel line. NIIICE yellow pages. No headache.

Give me HSIAMetalKing's $10, and I will buy him a book and a yellow highlighter, so his poor head doesn't hurt so bad.

I like books, and also games with lots of words in. Planescape Torment is a game that jumps to mind as one that has more reading than playing.

Also, I have been known to read a book while playing a game on the second playthrough, during some of the long cutscenes. (The Metal Gear series springs to mind)

Reading.

As of this moment I am re-reading the Eisenhorn trilogy omnibus by Dan Abnett before going off to read (no joke) a dozen new books that my parents have bought me. Unfortunately since my parents are 65 and 55 most of what they buy me is shit and I end up re-reading the same sci-fi novels over and over again. Speaking of which I should probably visit my local sci-fi bookshop soon.

On the other hand I do love games for their immersing gameplay and (normally) interesting/quirky/wtf plots. I am probably the only one of my friends who complains if a decent game is ruined by a shitty story. This may also have something to do with the fact that I am the only persion of my friends who actually watches the cinematics.

I like to play games through the day and then read in the night. I guess enjoy both a lot, but its hard to find a book which I can read non-stop all night.(only the inheretance series and the harry potter books have I read through out the entire night.)

I'd say games... they're interactive, in reading you only flip the pages.
I'll try to be consise in my response to this, because I'm sure I could go on for ages, but interactivity does not necessarily provide a richer experience. It can, sure, but more often than not, a well crafted story with multiple deep characters and numerous dramatic moments will easily defeat Shooter #430 for an immersive experience. Perhaps not necessarily a more visceral experience, but a generally deeper and more engaging one.

People who don't like reading just havn't found the right book yet.

@Cab00se206 - See if you can find the Hyperion and Endymion omnibusses by Richard Simmons. Excellent, excellent reads.

@rayman 101 - Book series I thoroughly enjoyed was The Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan. It's a looooong series, but I really liked reading through it. The first book, The Eye of the World kinda starts out like Lord of the Rings... but I promise it doesn't stay that way.

And anyone else who wants recommendations: The Gunslinger, Stephen King, book one of the Dark Tower. Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card.

I get the same thing.

I don't mind reading, but I don't read books that much. I read a lot more of the newspapers, magazines, and forums/articles online. Mainly because you can't judge a book by it's cover, and as such Sod's law dictates that the book I pick up with be boring and terribly paced. Apart from Horrible Histories. I love those.

Video Games can suck you in really well if they're good. However as purely an escape from the world most games are great, because driving, shooting and solving puzzles is inevitably going to be more interesting than most of the other things you could be doing (by which I mean working).

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is creating. Stuff like drawing, writing, building, thinking. Who here uses those sorts of things as outlets?

I think this sums up my opinion:
good book = good game
good book > shit game
shit book < shit game

"Reading or Gaming"?

Well, that depends. I'd never curl up in bed with a good game before nodding off, for instance... and there are times I'm just too tired to fire up the computer/console and make complicated, time-sensitive decisions. There are other times, though, that I just can't get into the mental space that I need to absorb a story, or I'm twitchin' to do something but the weather's lousy, or that last level is haunting my imagination too much to let the game go.

I won't say I prefer one over the other, because I don't. I will say that each has its merits.

I can find books to be a bit dull. A good book will have me reading it from start to finish without stopping but generally, I stick with games because they're easier to get into.
