So escapists, my question is this.

What situation or event has happened to you, where your only thought was "Oh shit, this could be bad".

I have 2 that I can think of.

When we were in Hawaii on holiday, we went out to one of the mountains overlooking the ocean. I stepped down onto volcanic rock to get a better photo, where upon I slipped and fell over. At the time I didn't think it was too bad until I heard one of the friends who came with us scream and shout my name, at which point I thought "oh shit....this could be bad".

Turns out what I couldn't feel at the time was that I pretty much skinned the top half of my left arm, and almost completely skinned my thumb on volcanic rocks. The camera I was holding still works though.....cause the god forsaken thing landed on my skinned thumb.

My other one was during year 12, right before our HSC exams. At the time I was really into music, playing drums, guitar and piano, and was planning on doing a piece on each for the exam. I woke up one morning about 3 months before the exam, where my wrist was quite sore. Thinking nothing of it, I went to go practice drums, where upon after moving my wrist up and down, it felt like someone was jamming a sharp steel rod through my wrist. Once again the "oh shit" thought passed through my head, where I then decided to bandage up my wrist so it couldn't move.

Went to the doctors immediately, and turns out I had tendinitis from playing drums and guitar for 6-8 hours a day, went to a specialist, got a special splint that I then wore for 9 months.

Was fun times.

What about you, fellow escapists?

One of the worst moments of my life happened when I was out hiking. The trail I was hiking on went around a side of a mountain face, and while it was decently wide, one side of the trail basically ended in a cliff. Anyway, part of the trail gave way under my feet, and I ended up falling, and rolled down the cliff (which wasn't sheer 90 degrees, but was pretty steep at about 75 degrees), and hit a tree, which thankfully stopped me, but unfortunately also injured me. I fractured one of my wrists, sprained the other one, and sprained one of my ankles. I ended up having to crawl back up that cliff and onto the trail, and then walk two or so miles on my sprained ankle back to the parking lot, where I got some help from a couple of other hikers who drove me to the hospital since I couldn't drive my car with two messed up wrists.

Yeah, that was not fun. My entire thought process during the time was "oh shit if I don't make it back I'm going to be stuck out here all night."

Well, there was that fun time I got to choose between hitting oncoming traffic, a tree, or the 6 year old kid who just ran out into the street...

Two springs ago, straight line winds hit my town.
I woke up to the loudest howling, blowing wind I have ever heard, quickly glanced out my window and could not see the tree that was less than 3 feet away.

I flung out of bed thinking it was a tornado, ran upstairs and saw my family.
I'm looking at them in the "Ok, so what are we doing? Is this the real thing?" way for a few seconds before hearing something that sounded like our washing machine just jumped a couple of feet of the floor.

A huge tree in our yard had fallen over blocking our back door and crushing the fence.
I thought for sure we had seconds before the house was going to be obliterated.
So we all head for the bathroom and wait.
And wait, and wait. That was the most dreadful wait I have ever had to endure. Just sitting, waiting, unsure if the storm is going to ease up/go away, or if a tornado is about to possibly kill you.

We lucked out though, and no tornado was seen, but what I learned that day was straight line winds are all the force of a tornado, just not dressed up in a funnel.

Oh shit, that is never fun when you have a choice to make.

Every time I put my keys into a different pocket than I usually do, believe me.

Also every time something goes wrong at work when sometimes due to so many things involved even identifying the problem can be a herculean task, and at the same time a task that needs to be done the moment the problem occurs.

Take out the kid, replace "tree" with "ditch", and add the possibility of the car behind me ramming me if I hit the brakes too hard and I'm there. Ye gods, I hate it when people go for tight overtaking maneuvers.

Recently helped to change the oil on my dad's car. I was driving it on the ramps to lift it up and... well, I over shot it. Dented the ramps but otherwise everything was fine. Also I had a full on nervous breakdown a few weeks ago. Now that was a serious "oh shit" moment.

Oh man do I have a few of those.

Biggest one would be the time I was in a heated argument with some other kid (we were around 13ish at the time) about some bullshit that is too stupid for me to ever admit.
All normal so far right?
We progressively got more heated until we were shouting and threatening each other.
Still normal I say.

Then he pushed me and as I was about to retaliate he pulled out a knife.

Now I didn't go "Oh shit" then. No, my mind didn't have thoughts for a few seconds after I saw the knife.

Then came my thoughts of "Ohshitohshitohshitohfuckshitohshitfuck" etc.

Wasn't the first time someone pulled a knife on me (though I'd like to think I'd go Oh shit no matter how often it happened) but it was the first time someone had done it purely from anger and it was the first time I 100% believed the person was going to stab me to death.

Actually, I just remembered one my friend told me yesterday.

His step father and him were trying to fix the tractor 2 days ago, when they realised they would probably have to start pulling apart the engine.

so they grabbed the tools and started to pull it apart. It was then that they realised that the seals around the fuel lines were pretty screwed, a tool hit the engine, sparked, and the whole engine went up in flames.

My friend was saying it was a huge ass fire and they had to run and grab the hose to put it out before it set the entire backyard and house on fire.

There was this one time when I hit my thumb with an axe while chopping wood. If I hadn't worn those parched and hardened gloves, I would probably have chopped a part of it right off.

Oh joy an oh shit thread, where to begin. Let's see the time I was nearly set on fire because my brother threw gasoline on the bon fire I was standing in front of. No, how about the whole taking a rake to the face and having ten doctors hold down the four year old to give him stitches, na I tell that one to much. Rusted metal fence to the leg, no? Then how about the four car reacks? Or the brakes going out as we head down a 65-75 degree angled hill missing a car on both sides so close the air should have scratched the paint on all three cars, na to boring. The other time I was set on fire? shot? stabbed? stabbed again? blunt force trama? survivors guilt knowing you are alive because of the Oklahoma city bombing that allowed you to not be hung? blacking out for three seconds to find your about to remove someones face with your fist? having a loaded gun waved in your face for no other reason then because it is loaded? over-dosed on pain pills? seventy-five counts of suicide brought on by mental breakdowns and crushing depression?

...man...my life has been so boring...guess the worst was going from just starting a nice new job saving up money up for your first place and then being droped off in the country side at a half way house for convicts. That was a fun "Oh shit" moment, goes from "well fuck I'm getting sent back half-way cross country to a place where there is no work" to "Oh shit how many of these guys have killed people...I don't want to get stabbed again that isn't fun". Oh and before anyone asks, family....yup...family. >.>

All if mine have been driving related, both as a driver and passenger.

1. (Driver) I was driving along a major road and a couple in a little car basically ran me off the road instead of overtaking me. The literally turned into my lane while I was neck and neck with them.

2. (Passenger) Late night driving from a country town back into Melbourne, a wombat ran out onto the road. My friend swerved, lost control of the car, hit a rock face, then nearly fell down a long ditch with a bunch of trees in it. Car stopped not 2 meters from the edge of that ditch. Had to wait an hour for his dad to come get us at 2 a.m. in the middle of nowhere. Worst part, the wombat came back (unless it was a different one) and just swaggered off into the night.[footnote]Which is funny now.[/footnote]

Had three of those on St. Patrick's Day this year. I work as a delivery guy for a restaurant and had to work a double shift, because the guy who was suppose to take the evening shift never showed up. This wouldn't have been too bad had not been for the fact I only got about 3 hours of sleep the night before. Got through the morning/afternoon shift without a problem, but the evening shift is where I had three "Oh Shit" moments.

1)I'm approaching a red light at 40 mph and for some reason I fail to notice that the light is red. Suddenly on blue pick up truck is crossing the intersection. I make a sharp left turn and barely miss the guy, but ended up in the oncoming traffic lane. By some miracle nobody was in the lane so I just quickly drive into a shopping plaza. Took me a good few minute to calm down after that. Also, I'm lucky that the blue truck stopped in the middle of intersection when I swerved out of the way otherwise I would have hit him.

2)I'm driving back after my last delivery and I'm waiting for a stoplight to turn green so I can make a left turn. However, there is an oncoming car who has the right of way and I almost end up crashing into him when the light turned green.

3) Literally two minutes after the last "Oh shit" moment, I'm in the middle lane of a three lane road with another car in the left lane. The left lane is about end and instead of slowing down to let me pass the car suddenly speeds up and attempts to switch lanes in front of me. However, he doesn't put enough distance between us when he makes the turn, and I have to quickly swerve into the right lane to avoid hitting the side of his car. Luckily no one was in the right lane at that moment.

Needless to say that was not my favorite day at work.

The first time I ever rode a proper bike trail I ended up with two choices: continue down the only line available, hit the rock, destroy the bike, and catapult myself into a fairly hefty tree, or bail. Down a six foot drop that I couldn't see the bottom of, with who knew what at the bottom. My mind went blank, then the 'ohshitohshit' started. I was going to get hurt either way, so I bailed and tried to save the bike by kicking it back onto the trail as I jumped. It worked. The bike was fine...

The most recent one was this Thursday past. I was driving along some seriously twisty (and fun) single track road. It was brilliant until a couple of sheep decided to run out and stand in the middle of the road as I came around the corner. The 'oh shit' started immediately and I slid into the first skid I've ever done, trying to remain calm while acutely conscious of the cliff drop leading to the sea on one side, the cliff on the other, and the big beasts in front. Me and the car were both fine that time, but it took some horn blaring and then actual chasing to get the sheep moving again...

I've had a lot whilst climbing, although they weren't all that bad. Sometimes it's easy to forget you're attached to a rope...

I'm not a huge risk taker, so I don't often find myself in situations where my own actions are about to screw me over prison-style. The last time I can really think of when I just completely screwed the pooch was almost 2 years ago when I was in my navy training school. I had overslept the week before because I turned my alarm off and immediately fell back asleep. No big, shit happens, the navy understands that. But then exactly one week later, I did the exact same thing AGAIN (which I was pretty mad at myself for because I rarely make the same mistake twice, especially so quickly). Yea... my instructors were a tad less forgiving that time. It was not a fun day for me.

Are you still in the navy? I was considering joining the navy but got talked out of my by a friend whos sister tried to join, and apparently she said it was quite terrible.

Anytime I come onto the forums and I see a thread about sexism, misogyny, ponies, bias reviews, rape, consoles vs PCs or political & religious views (That's why I try very hard to avoid R&P).

So recently, I've said "Oh shit" enough times to fertilize half of the world's farms. And all of the gardens.

When my dad had a stroke and when he died.
It sucks when you dad is a company owner and his death means you have to worry about what to do with the company.
Gives you very little time to mourn.

I wanted to make some popcorn once, and the only popcorn we had was in this brown paper bag. Thinking nothing of it, i just put the bag in the microwave, and after two minutes was expecting my popcorn to be ready to eat.

After two seconds, the bag set on fire :(, so good thing i didn't leave the kitchen. I had to grab it by the bottom with a pair of oven gloves and throw it in the sink. To this day, i haven't made popcorn again.
