In deathmatch games (Halo, etc.,) yes, they do work. However, the people playing are not likely to use tactics when there's a room full of people to melee.

In military sims, they work beautifully. Take Project Reality. Use any real-life tactic and it works perfectly.

Red Orchestra distinguishes itself from the lot by combining intensity with realism. the weapons are lethal. Rifle Fire often result in a kill, rounds tend to ricochet in enclosed spaces and automatic weapons provide suppressive fire.

There is a distinctive feature that briefly blurs the screen when you are suppressed by incoming fire, thus preventing you from sticking your head out or doing anything meaningful at all.

This goes beyond promoting real life tactics, it actually makes them very effective.
