Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines.

It's just for one bit in a haunted house, but it's so well done. The first time I played it, I had to shut it off and play again in daylight.
Ah I freaking hated that.
Especially since I only had a pistol, with 4 shots when I went in.
It felt like it was the hardest quest to do, and then i realized I didnt even fire a shot
Heh, did you go into third person at any point? Biiig surprises there...

Occasionally something comes up on the screen just behind you. If you turn to look at it, it dissapears. I genuinely found it fucking terrifying.

So, ok here's what I'm willing to settle for guys... a CREEPY game, that is good for Halloween, but mostly is just really fun to play.

I'm willing to let scary slide a little since it looks like options are limited.

Yeap, I had to switch out of first person because it scared the crap out of me, only to see her right behind me.

Also the second house they make you go to, later on in the game. You sneak in from the second floor down into the basement, and it has the blood all over the place..creepy stuff.

I would recommend F.E.A.R., but it would be a wasted effort, considering that Penumbra: Black Plague makes F.E.A.R. look like hello kitty's happy-go-lucky sunshine adventure in comparison. Its also only $15 on steam, so its certainly worth a look-at.

P.S. BEWARE THE KENNEL

Is that the bit with the Tzimsce that's shooting snuff films or the Malkavian's home with the recordings and the proto-splicers? Hell, they're both terrifying.

Public service announcement - if you haven't played Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines yet, do it now. Your thanks can be sent via PayPal at a later date.

My friend had this creepy old game callec Nocturne set in 1920s-1930s USA with Capone and zombies. Lol :p
Yeah the Nocturne engine was used in a few other games too, including the Blair Witch series. It would be a bit dated today, but if you want creepy atmosphere and truly fear inspiring lighting, anything with that engine would be good...

That one hotel? I agree.

Also: Penumbra. It's pretty good.

Any of the Thief games. Especially the Cragscleft Mine level in the first one, and most of the later levels. It looks like crap but still manages to be terrifying.

That one was OK.

But can you really go wrong with "Call of Cthulu"?

Oh lord, I can't imagine playing that with my noise-canceling headphones on a PC as opposed to regular TV audio. I, honest to God, would shit my pants.

i think it was called the path.

real freaky
It's more disturbing than scary, in my mind. Lovely game, though.

I'm sure Penumbra's been mentioned, as has Silent Hill 3. Get those.

Also: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, and any Clock Tower game.

The very first Thief game isn't very scary, except for that one level. Oh god, that level. Anyone who's played it will know what I'm talking about, and agree.

And the ones saying Fatal Frame: I agree, but it's not on PC. FF is the scariest game (at least the first 3, haven't played the fourth one) I have ever played. Just thinking about it has me imagining Kyouka saying "Let me sleep... forever"

Well... I came here expecting a list of scary games. But when some of you pansies called S.T.A.L.K.E.R a scary game, well I will admit I was a little let down. There is nothing scary about the game. But I love the atmosphere it gives off, and would go as far as to call myself a huge fan of the series. However, Fatal Frame is indeed scary stuff, and I LOVE it.

I just wish there was a really good horror game right now. This Penumbra has piqued my curiosity so I will set about getting it.

I kinda hate being this desensitised to things, I ruin all the fun for myself :(
