Realistic FPS Co-op

Hello, as the title of the post suggests, I am looking for a realistic FPS that my son and I can play together.

We've played TF2, Borderlands, and Serious Sam together, but I was hoping for something a bit more current, set in reality, ...something that actually takes good teamwork (and hopefully) some tactics. I do know that MW2 had the scenarios, and we're considering going that route, but we're really looking for a full on game if one exists. I'm a little weary of the full on multiplayer games, mostly due to flashbacks of being knifed from 20 feet away and repeatedly killed upon spawn from guided missiles...that's not the kind of gaming we're looking for.

As a "for instance," my son saw me playing Medal of Honor Airborne and was really hoping it had co-op game play.

Thank you for reading!

Halo 3 does take some tactics on the higher difficulties. Especially on the later levels.

But seriously man, this is the WRONG forum to ask about realistic shooters. 90% of these guys will probably recommend a bunch of RPGS instead. They HATE realistic shooters, mostly because they're marketed so heavily that it seems like they're the only games that come out, despite there being many more games that come out that aren't shooters.

Wikipedia has goddamn everything.

I'm afraid I'm not the best person to give recommendations otherwise, though. Realistic FPSes have never been my cup of tea, or even the biscuit to coincide with one. I'm just here to spam Wiki links until people realize that I'm actually the most complex advertising bot ever to exist.

Army of Two?

I personally couldn't stand it. But it does have a full co-op campaign, set in a modern world and such. Though it's a bit more over-the-top gangsta style then military.

I'd recommend Gears of War(1/2/3) if you haven't played it already. It's not realistic, it's third person instead of first. But damn is the co-op good.

Don't know whether PC games are an option, but if they are SWAT 4's co-op is absolutely brilliant and certainly worth looking into. About as realistic as you can get with an FPS short of actually joining the police.

Well if you are talking about actual realistic shooters then you need to ignore all mainstream stuff, all those big names are just casual arcadey shooters in gray and brown suits.

What you should look at is the ArmA series, that is as close as realistic shooters have gotten sofar.

Realistic? Well it's sort off realistic, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, my brother and I enjoyed the co-op campaign quite a bit but it's a little bit old, would recommend something more current but I haven't played any current games.
Now if you have a PS2/Xbox/GC/Wii with GC controllers, I would recommend you check out TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect, they are not realistic at all but they are both great games with really good co-op besides you will have quite a few laughs while playing them so it would be worth it.

ArmA 2 and ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead. Get A.C.E. mod with it and you'll be off to a great start.

Another quite realistic FPS is WWII Online: Battleground Europe. It has one hell of a learning curve though, requires a monthly subscription and is a combined arms sort of game.

Having great fun with Battlefield 3's co-op just last night, unlocking all of the weapons it gives, with my friend, for a couple of hours, followed by reaping havoc in multiplayer, I'd say Battlefield 3. Working as a efficient squad gives a very rewarding feel.

So Battlefield 3. But I'd stick with the hardcore-mode, since the normal mode can't really be called realistic, and I, nor any of my friends who play the game, don't find much enjoyment on that mode compared to hardcore. Too much information and not-nearly-as-lethal weapons.

There's not really "realistic" but Rainbow Six Vegas (1and 2) has pretty good coop, so does Army of Two and it's sequel.

That's because the ArmA games aren't shooters per se but military simulations that use the same engine as the Virtual Battle Space military simulators made by the same devs (Bohemia Interactive) for use by real world militaries.

I wouldn't say Vegas 2 is old - 2008 wasn't it?

Anyhow OP that's the game I thought I'd recommend. RS:V2 is very team-player orientated, with good tactical scenarios to work out and execute.

Plus Ubisoft have released the DLC map pack for free, so that's always a plus.

People, he means realistic in terms of look ... you expect a kid to play ARMA 2? Really?

Battlefield 3 has a co-op thing, I have never played it but BF3 is a great game. The multi player can be a bit annoying (spas 12 >>>> everything else), spawn raping can be a problem.

MW3 and MW2 has GREAT co-op missions, sometimes you are in a plane raining death down, while the other person runs through streets. Other missions involve things like racing snow mobiles or killing 20 people armed in bomb disposal gear or kill so many bad guys.

I'd recommend Rainbow six vegas 2. I am going to assume that by "realistic" you mean games that require tactics, where you can die in a few shots and kill enemies quickly too? That kind of thing.

So yeah. Rainbow six vegas 2. The whole campaign is Co-op and it also has a seperate mode called terrorist hunt which is pretty good.

What platforms are available?

If you have access to two PCs, the Operation Flashpoint and ARMA series both offer masses of co-op content, but you need two PCs in a LAN to make use of it.

ARMA2 even comes in a free to play version, it's quite heavily cut down from the retail one, but it's a free way to try it out. If you can you should try it, it's very 'realistic' but can also handle huge amounts of stuff going on. It's not uncommon for games to have 50+ human players and hundreds (seriously) of AI bots milling around too.

Hmm. If you have System Link or a couple of PCs you should get a Operation Flashpoint. I personally liked Dragon Rising. Mmhmm.

I'd recommend Army of two, or rainbow 6 Vegas 2,although I've always found the rainbow 6 games rather hard, so take that into consideration.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 comes to mind. Very nice campaign coop mode.

Modern Warfare 1 is also real fun to play as a team, stick to hardcore mode, much more realistic. I prefer it over the newer titles. MW2 and 3 have coop missions though called spec-ops.
