I have to say that for true co-op, PAYDAY: The Heist is a great bet. It's essentially Left 4 Dead but you rob banks and pull heists. Also, there are skill trees and you can level up. Plus it's cheap.

Operation Flashpoint is fun in coop. It has a few share of problems but it does a nice job at being a good coop game

Thank you all for your recommendations!

I failed to state that we're looking for PC games that we can play together. Console games are fun, but I've never been able to get into aiming by pushing a reticle around with a thumb-stick. My son doesn't mind it, but he prefers mouse and keyboard too.

Cost is a minor issue, but not a deal-breaker. Going to go and research these games with my son and see which direction we'll go.

Thanks again!

Operation flashpoint Dragon rising. I Quite likes playing it with my Dad, it's very good and the AI's not half bad. Only downside is that if you fail you have to start again...

Tom Clancys Rainbow six Vegas 2 is superb. Custom characters dude! Tons of guns and kit to choose from, and a real laugh whilst being a good challenge.

ARMA, Rainbow Six games made by Red Storm, Operation Flaspoint, The SWAT games, and the original Ghost Recon and expansions (also made by Red Storm) are the only realistic shooters I know of. Of these the Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games are the most accessible, they are getting a bit long in the tooth though.

If by realistic you mean games with a high degree of graphic fidelity, Battlefield 3 is a lot of fun, the Co-Op sucks, but you can team up in a squad in the multiplayer.
