Off the top of my head, or dvds I can seen on my shelf, I recommend: Akira (anime), The Big Lebowski (comedy), Mongol ('biography'/historical), The Descent (horror), Reservoir Dogs (action/drama), Superbad (comedy), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (comedy/drama), In the Loop (political satire), The Orphanage (spanish horror/ drama), and Pan's Labyrinth.

A film I only saw recently and thought was great was the latest Star Trek film. I'm not into Star Trek at all but still really enjoyed the film and nothing really went over me head, though I'm sure if you're a fan there's quite a few nods to the series favourites.

The Good, The Bad, The Wierd

No one's mentioned it yet and just for sheer entertainment I don't think I've watched anything recently that tops it. Awesome cinematography and music, simple but effective story (obviously very close to it's namesake) with fantastic action scenes that have a perfect mix of cool and comedy. As long as you don't mind the subtitles I'd completely recommend it.

Ooh! <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226846-2-50-Reviews-Doomsday-2008>Doomsday is one that is really fun to watch, especially with friends, or if you like fun action films.

If you want an actual "good" movie though, track down <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231661-2-50-Reviews-Snow-Angels-2007>Snow Angels. That movie is awesome.

I'm amazed you also didn't say Orphan.

Anyway, yes I'd agree with all that above me along with...

Oldboy
A Tale of Two Sisters
Ichi the Killer
Gozu
M
Religulous
Moon
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
Paprika
Ghost in the Shell
Hero
House of Flying Daggers
Kung Fu Hustle
Audition
Ju-On
Orphanage
Pan's Labyrinth
The Big LeBowski
A Serious Man
Lady Vengeance
Rear Window

I mention those because they're the most recent films I've bought.

Look up a little movie called "Primer." It is about a couple scientists who invent "something" i cant say more without spoiling it.
This film will mind-rape you. Then you will watch it another four times till you understand. So the sooner the start, the better. Really. It's awesome.
Saw it and hated it. It felt pretentious and deliberately confusing, like it was trying to hide a very shoddy concept behind a veneer of misunderstood genius. I'm not a dumb guy, I've got a 99th percentile IQ (to the right of the distribution, or else this argument would be a little null) so the whole 'you're too dumb to understand it' comeback I've always recieved on IMDB doesn't fit.

No offence, you liked the film and that's great, but if a film feels like work then I'm not up for it.

You, sir, have an absolutely amazing taste in movies, although I'm not a huge Coen Brothers or Takashii Mike fan. I love Audition though.
Aye, thank you kind sir ^-^

I can understand not being a Takashi Mike fan. I'm not really big on his movies either, but not a fan of the Coen Brothers???

Blaspheme!

I will admit I was a bit disappointed by Audition after all the hype I heard over it. Ichi the Killer was way better.
