I've been reading and watching horror anime, but for every gem like Hell Girl or Hellsing, there are 8 or 9 awfully made stories, bland character infested, badly resolved shows as well. Does anyone else know of some gems that may be interesting to at least check out?

It's not so much horror as it is a "suspense/thriller," but Paranoia Agent is a great, albeit short anime.

Higurachi is a good one. Several different stories with the same characters but no continuity. It's a wonderful series.

Uzumaki, 21st Century Boys, and Dragon Head.................Yup, that's about all I got.

Edit: Gantz? maybe.

Not so much scary horror as WTF horror, but Rin, Daughters of Mnemosyne.

It is definately not for younger audiences though.

I tried out boogiepop phantom once, it couldn't keep my interest, but maybe I'll go back. I personally loved death note on several indiscriminate levels, and elfen lied was good at the time, if a little off balance. Lastly Uzumaki and Gantz... I wouldn't say I loved those two, but they were quite enthralling when I tried them. Thanks for the recommendations to all, keep 'em coming.

Blood The Last Vampire didn't draw me in when I watched it, but Perfect Blue was a straight up startle fest from beginning to end. On another note, I hardly know any of these others above me. ( Oh hey, elfen lied )

Ghost Hunt was slow, beginning to end in my opinion, but I was watching it while I was sick, so maybe I missed some of the best parts while vomiting

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is somewhat of a horror gem, especially the first season [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/anime/6503-Anime-Review-Higurashi-When-They-Cry], which is available on DVD in the states.

Elfen Lied is worth a watch too, though it's certainly a mixed bag of genres, and I've heard great things about Monster, though I've yet to see it.

The second anime season does picks up on continuity somewhat (with the 2 very long solution arcs), but at the cost of some of the mindscrew and horror from the first one.

Yea, I'm watching through Kai right now. I've just started it but it's doing a lot to give the anime continuity. I like it so far though so that's good.

Anime:
  • [li]Baccano! [http://myanimelist.net/anime/2251/Baccano!] (might feel a bit confusing at first but everything will come together in the end)[/li]
    [li]Elfen Lied [http://myanimelist.net/anime/226/Elfen_Lied] (popular and for a good reason)[/li]
[li]Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni [http://myanimelist.net/anime/934/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni] (don't let the first couple episodes and the artstyle scare you away; I didn't really like Kai and haven't watched Rei yet)[/li]
    [li]Mononoke [http://myanimelist.net/anime/2246/Mononoke] (don't let the artstyle scare you away)[/li]
[li]Monster [http://myanimelist.net/anime/19/Monster] (pretty long and sometimes it might feel like nothing is happening but I recommend that you stick it with till the end)[/li]

Manga:
  • [li]20th Century Boys [http://myanimelist.net/manga/3/20th_Century_Boys] (a.. um.. AWESOME)[/li]
    [li]21th Century Boys [http://myanimelist.net/manga/743/21st_Century_Boys] (sequel to 20th Century Boys)[/li]
[li]Alive! [http://myanimelist.net/manga/965/Alive!] (all I remember about this is that I thought it was good)[/li]
[li]Berserk [http://myanimelist.net/manga/2/Berserk] (gruesome, full of gore, awesome art and one of the best mangas ever)[/li]
[li]Dorohedoro [http://myanimelist.net/manga/1133/Dorohedoro] (don't know what so say about this, check it out yourself)[/li]
[li]Doubt [http://myanimelist.net/manga/5293/Doubt] (this was pretty good but it loses some of its impact when read in one go)[/li]

I'd say Higurashi for actual horror.

Also, School Days, for that one moment.(If you seen it all the way through, you'd know what I'm talking about.)
