Buck 65. One of the best musicians alive, if you ask me. None of that 'I grew up in a neighborhood that was more impoverished than the neighborhood you grew up in, ************' nonsense, either. Just pure poetry. I'm genuinely surprised that I'm the first to mention him.

Edit: Scroob is a really nice guy. And doesn't afraid of anything. Met him last summer, and he was very polite.

Good Rappers? I don't understand....
Eh, i've never really liked rap. I understand that other people might, but it's never really appealed to me. God I feel old. But i'm not. Godsake.

I don't believe in the idea of a "good" rapper. That being said, I enjoy Dan Bull's Epic Skyrim Rap on YouTube.

As far as actual rappers go, Del The Funky Homosapien is my favourite.

MIA is the only female rapper I've ever heard that I like

And of course

There's the fact that it actually involves some talent,
Rapping doesn't? Many people sound ridiculous when they try to rap cos they can't get the precise punch and rhythm.
And if you listen to many rappers, especially the best ones, there are subtly inserted melodies and variances in their vocal intonations.
If anything, it's harder to rap because it's something you have to nurture much more than singing. I'd like to see the average person match that rapping.

it sounds much better (Where do you think the saying "Music to my ears" came from?),
lol

it is a better representation of the effort people put into composing (If the same amount of effort is put into a #1 song the same effort put into a rap song would only go to #5),
Really? Forgetting that this is irrelevant anyway, melodies are relatively easy to write since there's already the 13 tone base to form them from and in the case of #1 songs, it's just finding a hook and then putting in a simple, thrown together beat underneath. Unique rapping has to find unique and inventive rhythms and all the vocal flicks. And then there's all the production behind it, which needs just as much attention.

it allows for a much wider variety of styles (Opera, rock, punk, goth, metal, blues...)... I could go on for hours
Rapping has been used in hip hop, electronic music, grime, rock, metal, r&b, etc, Either way, it's irrelevant. You might as well say that heavy use of effects pedals is a shitty part of music because it's only used extensively in shoegaze. As far as blues and opera go (which is the only genre you listed which doesn't have rapping), they came before rapping became prominent. If anything, rap is still in its infant stages and it's only a matter of time until it spreads and people find new ways to use it.

A year old dead thread about rap is the best thing you could think of to necro?

For shame.

What posts were talking to me?

This isn't my thread....

If I had a choice of listening to rap or listening to The Carpenters while having my testicles whumped with a meat tenderiser i'd be telling my wife we won't be having any more kids.

Ok discovered Scroobius Pip recently and really liked that, and iv been into Rugged Man for a while, but aside from that I havent really found any rappers that amazingly original lyrically. So do you know any, and dont point out obvious ones like Eminem etc. (iv heard of him :p).

(oh and this, listen to this if you like good rap)
Met the pip in person at a tiny gig in a student bar about 4 years ago, lovely chap. But if you want good rap depending on the type of content you want to listen to try lowkey, akala, logic and mic righteous.

They were on Page 2 or something. Apparently you saw the need to post on this thread despite not having any reason to have a vested interest in it.

I always post in threads I have no vested interest in.

Have you seen some of the threads that pop up on this forum?

If we all just waited for ones we actually cared about it would be a very quiet forum.

Plus it's incredibly amusing to make posts that are obviously not serious and see if someone takes it seriously. Although it's almost certain that someone here will take it seriously, there are people here that take EVERYTHING seriously.

I didn't reply because there was no need. They had served their purpose and given me a giggle.

Fair 'nuff, I can't blame you for that. After all, "amusement" is pretty much the only reason I stay here myself.

Obviously all the classics mentioned so far are great but my favourite recently is MC Solo from Horrorshow. I think he was only 17 or 18 when this was recorded and it's probably one of the deepest hip-hop songs I've ever heard, it's so heartfelt and passionate. It's been a long time since I've seen a MC this personal.

Critical Beatdown is nothing less than a blueprint for the future of rap, Ultramagnetic MC's first and only good album.
Black Sheep just barely caught the tail of the golden age of hip hop before "gangsta rap" became the dominant form.

After rap became more accepted and eventually became pop-rap it necessarily became simpler, here we have a schism between pop-rap and the more classic complex sample driven tracks that you find in underground rap.

Lyrics Born is simply amazing on this track.

MF Doom has literally been rapping since 1989 and has had something like seven aliases, five of them he created in the past ten years and in the same amount of time has been featured on something like 110 albums 27 of them his own.

I can't recommend this album enough. With Beauty and the Beat Edan takes all the lyrical inspiration of the new school(1989-1993) and seamlessly adapts it to complex post 2000 funk sampled turntablism.
