You know, never in my anime viewing history has a project made me as infuriated as Cross Ange.
I stated in the three episode rule that the show was slightly improving with the lack of dissonant scenes and the fact that Ange grew a bit of a spine.
Now, I take it back, while there are no dissonant scenes for the fourth episode, it still sucks. It's not even the fanservice which usually gets me but a combination of two things
One: Ange is unlikable again. I know that three of the team hate you but you were given opportunities to make friends with people and you just outright refuse. I get that you are still prideful but stop screwing yourself over. You are going to make things worse, and they did.
Two: the Gundam Seed references are becoming blatant and dense as a harem protagonist's brain
First was a shot of Freedom Gundam's rifle and shield along with the waist railgun.
I was angry but I am willing to call it a little cameo if it weren't for the next scene.
Seriously, Kira Yamato is here, WHY. I know that Kira Yamato still is in the top 10 for Newtype magazine but this is absurd. Not only that but it's another island scene, stop copying Seed.
The final straw was during the preview. It is apparent that Ange will lighten up and become more friendly with our Kira expy. If she starts being friendly to the team, I'm calling this female development due to a male character. I know the writing isn't good but did you have to use one of the worst female character development tropes out there.
Let me clarify. It is fine for a female character to develop after spending time with a male character. However, the change can't be instantly within the episode but a slow progression over time as they get to know each other. That way, it's more naturalistic and doesn't feel like the whole "all she needed was a strong man" trope.
Edit: after some traversal on the Anime News Network forums, I have to make a correction to my arsenal point. While the Freedom Gundam's rifle was present, it was not the waist railgun but the wing stored shoulder plasma cannon and the shield was from the strike rouge.
The point still stands though that it's too heavy on the SEED references
