I have to admit I've engaged in a little bit of name calling over Xbox live when I get together with a party of friends and beer is involved, I don't mean any of it but when your with your friends and there doing it you some times get drawn into it.

Saying that when people each others "gay" or "******" doesn't mean they think the target of their of their childish ire is truly homosexual is completely irrelevant. The fact is, the insult's use is based on the fact that they think people will be annoyed and insulted to be called gay - in other words, they may think being gay is a bad thing, and/or they may think that other people think it's a bad thing.

This is reinforced by the fact that if words meaning "homosexual" are being regularly adopted as general-use pejoratives ("gay", "******"), it means there are prevailing homophobic attitudes in a community. Words adapted as insults are overwhelmingly things that are unpleasant (e.g. shit), crude (twat), subnormal (retard), contemptible and so on.

It's fair to say the user of such a word is not necessarily homophobic themselves - they may just be a bit dense, following a fashion without thinking, whatever. But you can't avoid the fact that somewhere at the core of these words' use is a negative societal attitude to homosexuality.

Your point would carry a little more weight if the OP had not lamented the fact that this word has taken the place of a catch-all insult. He (or she) wondered out-loud why homosexuality is equated with negative qualities. My point is that this is not obviously the case. This word is often used to mean "you're stupid/incompetent/obnoxious", rather than "you engage in sexual acts with people of the same gender as yourself." Similarly, referring to someone as an asshole doesn't necessarily mean you believe they are, in fact, the exit point of a coelomate's alimentary tract, calling someone a scumbag doesn't mean you believe they are actually a used condom, referring to someone as a ************ doesn't mean you have personal knowledge of their acting out of their Oedipal complex, and calling someone a dickhead doesn't mean you believe they are indeed the glans of a penis.

I disagree. Calling someone a ****** is quite different from calling someone an asshole, a dickhead, or any other kind of insult. Calling someone a ****** is, as has already been pointed out, an insult to someone's masculinity. When someone calls you a ******, you are supposed to get angry not because it's a generic term for someone who is stupid/incompetent/ect, but because being gay supposedly makes you less of a man. Often being called a ****** will be accompanied by illustrations about the various gay things one does, as well as colourful variations on the word "gay". Cockmonger seems to be popular. Paradoxically, one being called a ****** will also be accused of being a pussy, which is another attempt to emasculate the target.

Your point would also be more valid if you had the ability to read minds and surmise the intentions of the people who use this word online... who you've never met... who are separated from you by distances of several if not hundreds of miles... whose faces and gestures you have never seen. Wait, you don't, do you? What am I thinking now?

They are fuckwads. They want attention, and they want it any way they can get it. They hate you, and they hate everyone else in the game. The only thing they hate more than people who aren't as good as them are people better than them. They are not intelligent beings, and as such cannot possibly know anything as complicated as how long a word has been around. I believe they may operate on some kind of hive-mind, but I can't prove it just yet.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say you are at this point thinking in the back of your mind about whether I'm being serious or not, and closer to the front of your mind is you thinking I'm wrong, and you're picking out everything you believe to be wrong with everything I'm saying.

Being homosexual used to have a stigma against it just like a lot of other things in the world (ex. oral sex). Twenty or thirty years ago this might have made sense but the world is more liberal. Questioning someone's sexuality seems like the easiest way to insult them. I mean, what is an asshat? jerkoff? asshole? How are those insults? They don't mean anything. But "******" means you like men and are therefore as useless as a bundle of sticks.

I've been playing multiplayer games, most of them PC shooters, for a very long time (over ten years) and throughout that time I have almost no recollection of anyone ever calling anyone else a '******.' This is probably because most of my online time was spent on well-moderated dedicated servers, where using any type of profanity or purposefully offensive language was likely to get you kicked/banned.

It seems in the last few years, '******' has become the insult-du-jour to be slung around like a big wet sack full of fecal matter and rocks, a paradigm shift of which I was blissfully unaware until the last couple of years.

It doesn't make sense to me. How does '******' trump any other insult in terms of emotional impact? Why call someone out on their sexual orientation instead of their ignorance, foolishness, clumsiness, or general lack of skill? Or, if '******' is instead being used as a substitute term for indicating these characteristics, then why not just call someone a douche, an asshat, a jackass, or a loser? Personally, when I hear someone being called a '******', or am called as such myself, I feel much less insult than I do shame and embarrassment to be sharing the same spaces as the kind of people who think that qualifies as appropriate critical language, even in an informal sense.

Why has homosexuality become correlated with bad characteristics to the point where accusing someone of it can be used as a catchall insult? How can so many people think that the word '******' can be easily substituted for an actual point? Is it strictly homophobia and prejudice? Are the old insults just not good enough anymore? Do people just think being crass helps get other people's attention?

What's going on here?
