Partly because of I haven't forgiven Bethesda for what they did to Fallout, partly because it's a steam exclusive.
Can't help but notice your avatar is Bethesda's re-worked power armour, though. Wouldn't some 51 be more apropriate than the 45?

I bought it because I love the world, I loved the new ideas they had, I liked how accessible the game was for both the casual and hardcore, where a casual player could grab a sword or spell and GTA it up, where as we the more hardcore could, mine, quest, craft and enchant custom gear then GTA it up.

Also there hasn't been a (Todd Howard) Bethesda game I haven't enjoyed.

Dragons, Jeremy Soule, Vikings, and better combat than Oblivion. I was also interested in seeing how the radiant AI feature and the branching skill trees would work.

Then you should have an avatar that represents the Interplay Fallout 3 not the Bethesda Fallout 3.

OT: If I have to get it on steam I'm waiting for the GoTY edition to be $20.

Two reasons:

- Because I am a sheep, GF was buying it, friends were too.

- Because I love mods.

Without the first reason I wouldn't have bought it on the release, not till CK at least. Without the second I wouldn't have bought it at all (unless it was at 66% discount or more). Disliking Fallout 3 and Oblivion didn't helped either.

I bought it because I thought I would love it like Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and get lost in a world with fun characters and game play and items...

What I got was fallout stripped of all it's humor and charm with a really nice coat of paint. And banished back to gamestop for 20 dollars cash, which I then used to buy Vodka and Taco Bell. A far better evening was had.

Hype. I loved Fallout 3 but disliked Oblivion (although in all fairness I didn't give it much of a shot, got bored very quickly). I bought it and thought "If it sucks, I'll return it." 6 hours later when I could finally tear myself away from the game I burned the receipt. It lived up to the hype.

Love dragons... Love bows and arrows (especially when there is skill to be used to get them to do what you want them to!)... Love sneaking... Loved Oblivion...! Will have a month off of work soon, and need something to last!

I wanted to see if Bethesda had actually managed to improve their ability to design games.

They had. Dramatically.

Just a shame they still have a long way to go. Still consider it a purchase worth my money though.

I bought it because I'm a crpg whore of the first degree. I love RPGs, specifically video game ones and if one comes out looking decent, not great or even good, I'll give it a go. I got Skyrim because it looked huge, engrossing and fun. It played like it looked. I recently got the map app on my iPhone and am looking to put it to good use on my next playthrough. After Mass Effect 3 that is. I'm looking to make a hybrid class type character, maybe something like a sneaky mage. A dark elf would be perfect for that. Having the map in hand at all times(an interactive one, the one on my wall doesn't help much) could make for an interesting playthrough at any rate.

My friend (who has oodles of disposible income) bought it on a whim. We opened it and I watched him play through the tutorial.

It blew my FUCKING BALLS OFF

I bought it the next day

Trailer was epic
Music was epic
It had Dragons
It supposedly had great graphics
It was supposedly going to be awesome

What I've learned:
-Never trust game trailers. Ever.
-War Drums in any music is awesome, as is chanting.
-Dragons can be very poorly done.
-Never trust people who say something has great graphics. Get PC screenshots and see for yourself.
-Never listen when someone says something will be awesome. They are always wrong.

So basically: Got it because of hype, game really wasn't that great, got bored, now playing other games.

I bought Skyrim for basically the same reasons you did with the exception of Morrowind. Never played Morrowind and I don't really intend to.

I enjoyed my time in Oblivion and had few gripes. But everything it did wrong was more or less fixed in Skyrim. Dragons are quite intuitive.

As some mentioned, the questline writing could use some work.
I just don't expect any Dark Brotherhood characters to live for very long in future installments. Seriously, they're getting Joss Whedon-predictable on us. (Those who know his works will know the reference I am making)

I don't even bother with Winterhold unless I really want to make the push for the staff or mask. I just join so I can train and get spells. Beyond that, magic-using enemies are a bunch of asskickers that can tear my caster to pieces.
And who's brilliant idea was it to make the last dungeon constantly drain my mana, effectively shutting the character down who may have already used up their potions from previous random draining? Seriously, fuck that guy.

You're missing out. What is lacks in graphics (these days) it makes up for in sheer size. As a note, it's bigger than Skyrim.

Didn't.

Bethesda has made good games, but I've seen the business model and am learning from the past.

From day 1; ~$60 game 3x ~$10-15 DLC, other miscellaneous DLC = ~$100.
Wait a year; Game + DLC = ~$40.
This, plus I didn't really like Oblivion, so I'll probably wait two or more years for the GotY edition with all the DLC to drop down to 20$ or less...It'll happen eventually, and in the mean time, I'll be working on mods, and playing Mass Effect.

Because I had recently built a gaming PC and wanted a brand new game to test it. I liked Oblivion and, to a lesser extent, Morrowind, so I thought Skyrim would be a good choice. I did enjoy Skyrim (and still do), but I didn't need a new PC for it. My 3 year old laptop could have run it. :/
