I normally enjoy her songs, but this one was just... well.. odd.

I say Meh! while flicking my wrist in a dismissive way.

I've only watched it once, just now. I may watch it a couple more times when I get home, just to be sure I didn't miss anything.

Truthfully, I didn't get it.

The consensus here seems to be: Croshaw's shtick is that he hates everything, therefore anyone hoping to be seen by him as a worthy companion would also hate everything, thus making Rebecca's performance Ironic(TM).

Trouble is, to my ear, it doesn't come off as ironic, but creepy. The lyrics and melody are tinged with anger and pain rather than wit (or even wit's cheap Chinese knock-off, snark). And so I'm left wondering just what the heck I was listening to.

If Croshaw does respond, it will probably be confined to his Extra Punctuation feature, as cobbling together an animation takes a week all by itself.

Good going Rebecca! I love the use of irony, the subtle quotations and the excellent video! Well done and I hope it pays off!!!

Ohhhhh, that was so close to being great...

Rebecca, I'm going to be honest: I've never been a fan of your songs. They're too repetitive, mainly, repeating the same chorus line about thirty times in a row at least three times on most occasions. They're not usually clever, either.

This one *almost* made me change my mind... it started out so damn strong, and it was hilarious, clever words and rhyming on par with Yahtzee himself. BUT THEN, you started into the chorus. "Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?... Is it ok?..." (repeat)

Please, please, stop doing that to your songs. You would be a pleasure to listen to if it weren't for the repetition.
I agree, though I do think it is a very difficult task writing one song a week without falling into bad habits. The writing process can be difficult enough but through that in with recording, mixing, mastering, and well its amazing anything gets released at all.
But still, she always loses me on every chorus in every song she writes.

I felt like this song was just a bunch of YZ references and then a chorus that had nothing to do with anything. The references also weren't tied together very well, they were just one random one after another.

I was hoping it would be a fast talking rap or something, to mock YZ and his ZP style of speaking.

I respect RM for the work she puts into her stuff but I'm just not a fan. I keep wanting to like her work. It's those damn choruses like you mentioned.

I can really think of nothing to say that would reflect my opinion of this song, so i'll simply quote Darth Vader by saying: "Impressive, most Impressive"

I hope Yahtzee does a review of the whole geek music genera, because there is so much better stuff out there than Mayes Muses. Perhaps it is my strait white maleness talking but I could never understand her viewpoint on games. Her videos tend to focus on trivial matters like the lack of different body types in 3d models, and not on the core gaming experience. At least with stuff like MC Fontalot's ?It Is Pitch Dark," he sings about the very core of the text adventure experience, pointless death for not grasping the developer's moon logic. It is because of this that I considered Mayes's Sims video to be her best work. It was the only time she sung about the core of a game's experience, playing a benevolent/malevolent god over some poor guy's daily existence.
You are seriosly missing the point of her musings. The songs she makes are not pre-planned snipes at particular elements of the game. Some are completly off the wall and may see to have little relevence to the game, at least to you. These songs describe emotion which the game evoked from her and her alone. Beyond that you might say that these songs are not truly vidoegame based at all, but rather based upon Rebecca's own feelings, thoughts, and opinions; which were brought about while playing the game.

Watch her "How to write a song in one Hour" , this may give you a clearer picture of what she does and why. If her songs seem absract, artsy and defiant of logic and reason, it's becuase she doesn't think like you. Anybody can pick out references. She's not doing MLA style citation here, it's music.

And as always with shows on the Escapist... if you feel your popularity waning... Do a show involving Yahtzee to try and prop yourself back up again.

Its sickening.

I like the implications of this video. All of the references and frames from the videos are all from the early videos (GH3, branston pickle, pants-on-head, etc.) and were done in the part that was a love song, then when it turned to hate there were no new references or pictures. What I get from this is that, like me, she started out loving him and somewhere along the way all the hate and dick jokes just started to get annoying.

I'm not quite at hate yet, but I feel like I only watch ZP out of habit at this point.

A hate song? I know of the fine line between love and hate, but this is a fairly uneven video.

I've been a fan of Rebecca Mayes since she first came on the Escapist. Her songs are smart, multi-layered, cultured, and, by far my favorite aspect, deeply observant about games as an emerging art form and what they [the games] imply about our society.

So it goes without saying I love this song! It's one of her best ones (I liked "take me back to the 80s" best myself), and tackles a subject that seems impossible to review: Yahtzee! (Where did he get that nickname anyway?)

That being said, I am NOT pleased with the amount of flak she's getting for this song (and I know she's getting a lot of love too!). As an unpleasable cynical curmudgeon myself, I love me some Yahtzee as well. He's extremely funny, and he's fighting for the good guys! But just like Ms. Mayes, I find myself grinding my teeth every time he casts his ire at the finer sex. I know he does it ironically, as his EP post about Wet clearly states, but it's still undermining women and makes sexism seem socially acceptable. So yes, her disappointment for his sexism, even though it's false, is valid.

To me it seems like she's sure getting a lot of flak for having the audacity to be woman (She shouldn't be on the Escapist! RAWR RAWR), and it's not fair. In the game industry, women are hugely outnumbered, and they're easy targets. I for one am proud that there exists a female game critic as intelligent, observant, funny, and talented as Ms. Mayes. It helps that she has dreamy eyes, but that's beside the point.

And the idea that she's doing it for attention? If you have been watching her videos (chances are, you, the haters, have not), you'd know she's been preparing for this for months. Also, if you read her blog (You don't do that either, haters) she's getting plenty of attention in her home country in the UK, in newspapers and TV and such, and she doesn't even know what to do with it.

Anyway, great job Rebecca, I can't wait to see the response. It was ten times better than I thought would be, and I thought it was going to be great! As a cynical, negative, pessimistic, feminist MALE, I salute you!

Wow...wasn't expecting that. Never seen a start of a flame war in a song before. Heh, perhaps Yahtzee will switch it up and go all hippie in a review of Rebecca. :)

I wouldn't worry about Yahtzee shooting you down over this song. The fact that you're a girl and you approve of him means even if he doesn't feel the same way as you he's going to be courteous.

Although I am hoping for the best. Good luck.

Edit: Also, I don't think he will talk about this in the next ZP people, but it could get a mention in the next extra punctuation.
