this quote sums me up nicely. if you're reading this, excellent work! you're awesome Rebecca. every single time I'm amazed at what you do.martpendle said:awesome song as always, just bought the album and I think every single person who likes music in any shape or form should, really impressed with your work, keep going and believe in yourself!
Yerrr, all interpretations are correct. Abusive lover would be an externalised version of what's going on internally. We create our realities from the inside i think. And you got it chepenoyo that's exactly what I was driving at. i agree a complex anti-hero and anti-villain is what elevates films/books/games above the simplistic good and bad binary, to something much more meaningful/powerful.ShyOblivion said:I took something different still from it. However, being as that her content is born from video games I do tend to focus on that aspect of the songs rather than any external topics. Though obviously I was mistaken somewhat after reading the intended message directly.chepenoyo said:Huh!Rebecca Mayes said:See the song is not just about monsters in games but having an internal monster, like an internal bully, that you have to learn to live with. That's why I made the video about the recording process because I always have to fight my monster in order to create, and my monster is always very critical about how well it is going. So that last little bit is the sweet voice of monstrousness itself. I only noticed it when I was going through my footage and thought well, darn it, that is the very thing this song is about.
That's completely other than what I read into it. I was sure you were talking about an abusive lover who you'd let into your heart and couldn't push away, even knowing he was bad for you.
For myself, the song made me consider (for quite honestly the first time) what's behind the enemies we face in these different games. Sure, I'd know the backgrounds, appearance, general attitude, and all of that. What I hadn't considered was the "life" behind these characters; "the love he lacks, the scars he had." We don't often stop to think why exactly we're out to destroy this individual in most circumstances, and what exactly their motivations and path may be.
Adding to this was the part about lowering your weapons, as if offering a peace. Then coupled with the bit about being unable to break one another and sharing this life was as if realizing some grim balance between the two. Or rather, the reaching of an understanding.

Then again, they are just a bunch of polygons and shaders, maybe they don't exist past those lines of code that will them to life.
Firstly, the concept of learning the story behind an intimidating foe can really be intriguing! Maybe i'm gonna write a book about that... hm... why not...Rebecca Mayes said:Yerrr all interpretations are correct. Abusive lover would be an externalisation of what is happening internally. Sometimes my monster is really big and scary and when I look at it and take the big black sheet off that it's wearing I see that it's just a little kid who is really scared and needs some love. That's not scary at all. It's kinda sweet. They are trying to protect us from making idiots of ourselves and the judgement of others - strange logic of protection by self-hatred.
I must say putting oneself out there creatively sometimes feels like a nuts thing to do - criticism from the inside and the outside. When I first started doing this I couldn't read the comments because it was paralyzing. Even now one little comment is like a dagger in my heart. But you have to speak your truth and please keep on with your honest opinions. I am realizing I can live with daggers. Pull them out. Carry on. It makes me stronger.
What did artists of old do without internet forums immediately commenting on their work?
I like how shes reached the UNCANNY VALLEY, shes so good shes set the bar high for herself. Do you go to Apocalypse Lane and say "boy, this will NEVER make it on tv"? no, because the bar is set for a little internet show and a site for videogames. And the thing is, almost ALL of her songs sound different. And musicians dont usually do that. Does one metallica song sound like techno, the next like pop rock, and the other like a folk song? No....Samcanuck said:Hello. Look, this isn't hate mail or anything of the like, and I'm not sure if Rebecca Muse reads these comments (but am hoping she does, this is directed to her). I really enjoy the fact that Rebecca writes her own music and lyrics. I realize it must be very difficult to do this task, especially so regularily. But I have to say some creative criticism. I find that the song's each have a similiar sound. And I am not saying thats a totally bad thing...but I feel that they are getting bland and uninspired when that is probably not the case. The style of writing, the sound of the music...even the beat and tempo seem to match the previous song far too much and far too often (and I mean that down the line..not just this song). I personally would love to see Rebecca put her hand into a different genre of sound every once in awhile, just to shake things up.
I'm not trying to say the quality is not there...not looking for a flame war either. It's just my opinion, and its something I have been thinking about saying for awhile. I like the concept, I like the writing...not a big fan of this song mind you, but mirrors was a great song with a message full of depth. Must be hard to create quality every other week, but in the spirit of creative criticism, this is my view. I hope Rebecca takes salt in it and tries some unique and creative sounds in the future...that is all.
Dude, she's good but you don't have to lick her feet clean. I've already given my criticisms for what I think, directed to her...I really have no desire to talk about her in the third person with you.Flauros said:I like how shes reached the UNCANNY VALLEY, shes so good shes set the bar high for herself. Well, good for fucking you. I was just using you as a jumping board to remark about the different levels of criticism. How someone can have a great flash video, and get nothing but praise, but if it gets even BETTER, it starts getting MORE criticism, because now its starting to get into different territory. Sorry if i ruined your little review that hurt your brain trying to make.Samcanuck said:Dude, she's good but you don't have to lick her feet clean. Not everyone is going to prefer her style of music that is most prevelant in her work. And besides, my critism is the fact that its starting to sound all the same (in my opinion). Creative critism is there to help the person see where they can possibly tie up loose ends. She recieves no help hearing how yet another dork has a fan crush on her no matter if a song is a 1 or an 11. That does not help her expand as a artist. Listen, quit being an insufferable suck up douche, I've done nothing to you and was quite respectful to Rebecca Mayes in my posts. You are the one who quoted me for your own self centered reasons. Next time, if you are going to lick her toes, do it on your own bloody post. And as a fan, are you really attempting to spawn a flame war on her video comment page...because that is exactly what you are doing. Grow up.Flauros said:Flauros said:Well, good for fucking you. Err. we need some kind of referee here. Chill out peeps! Opinions are opinions and I am grateful we don't all have the same one. I both enjoy having my feet licked clean (i think) and being challenged to keep raising the bar. I appreciate you. Heck I wouldn't be here without your comments. Even if they are harsh I'm grateful you take the time to critique, and I'm especially touched by your encouragements.Samcanuck said:Not everyone is going to prefer her style of music that is most prevelant in her work. As to why Monster isn't on the album - I sent the finalised album to my distributors 2 weeks ago in order to release on 28th May. I will have to decide what to do with the songs coming out from now on - could release them one by one on my own website or wait for a few to build up and do another album. Preferences?
