Reboots and remakes, do you care for them?

Usually if a series has to be rebooted, its because they were slowly becoming crap or were crap fullstop, as for remakes, in some instances its deemed awesome, HD remake of a game I loved as a kid! Count me in! At other times I can't help but feel used -_- Well we couldn't think of a new IP, so how about we make the same exact game you completed several times as a kid with a few extra levels and better graphics and charge you the same price as the game you bought full price and completed several times years ago.

Yes, I'm looking forward to the Oddworld remakes, yes, I'd go ballistic for a Populous the beginning sequel and Dungeon Keeper sequel so I suppose my little moan is called into question somewhat, lol. But Tomb Raider? It was fun in the day, but it became a drag, do I want a reboot? Not particularly :/ To be honest, it looks like they just made a new IP (or at least tried to) but stuck a character we all know well in order to make more money, again I feel used ¬_¬

I suppose I'm more angsty towards reboots then I am remakes of timed classics, but what do you guys think? Do we like reboots? Do you disagree? Do you think TR for example SHOULD be given another chance? How about remakes? Do you mind being charged full price for HDified versions of games you've already played? If so, what would you like to see HDified?

I find remakes to be kind of useless, because in most cases there already exists a game that's basically a remake of a previous game, but better.

Lets take the Tomb Raider example and run with it. The Uncharted Series is basically Tomb Raider, but with a male character and a cover mechanic, and it's fantastic. No point remaking Tomb Raider considering Uncharted is already just that, except better.

Sometimes I'm all for an HD re-release of a game, like Shadow of the Colossus, but only because fans actually really wanted that so it seems more like a service to the fans than a ploy to rip people off on their nostalgia.

Let's see...

Metal Gear Solid HD pack, Shadow of the Colossus/Ico HD, Devil May Cry(DmC, possibly), Ocarina of Time, all of which I'm really looking forward to.

However, as for Zelda, I just really don't know at this point. I really, really loved Ocarina of Time back in the day. It was original with some incredibly unforgettable dungeon crawling and characters, but now, this is most likely the fourth re-release of the game. I'm somewhat sick of this marketing decision because of Master Quest. Master Quest was just the same damn thing, except they swapped the items around in the dungeons to make them feel "new". This isn't new, you've just slapped my shit around so know I have to look into different chest for it. But wait, you at least put a slightly different puzzle that took absolutely no extra time for me to figure out.

Overall, re-releases are fine with me, just as long as it isn't Nintendo milking its golden cow.

I'd like a graphically updated version of System Shock and System Shock 2, with mouse look incorporated into System Shock. I don't want them to change anything elso about the game though.

A thousand times, no. I'm the kind of person who revels in nostalgia, but even I can tell when something is on life support and needs to have its plug pulled, as sad as that is. Only occasionally does a remake work, and it usually needs a couple decades at least. A remake that transcends significant generational gaps can work, i.e. going from 2D 8/16-bit to modern 3D, but otherwise, NO.

I have nothing against the notion.

Remakes, reboots and HD re-releases are all fine with me. Sure, you could say it's a bit bereft of creativity, but hey, it's not like every single original IP is bursting at the seams with revolutionary and innovative ideas, is it now? (Why hello there, Homefront. Sold 2m copies did you? Well done, now fuck off you tepid little turd.)

If the property happens to be something I loved back in the day then... so what? It's not like they're erasing the originals from existence. If whoever owns the rights were to remake, say, Flashback: Quest for identity as a first person shooter (obviously) I wouldn't be upset about it. I don't know if I'd buy it, but I wouldn't be having a frothing fanboy fit.

Of course, whether or not the individual products in question turn out okay is another matter.

Although in many cases I don't see why they couldn't just make a new IP and say it was inspired by such-and-such. Nobody's going to get pissed off if they're honest about it... well, nobody worth listening to anyway.

It only annoys me when the developer is doing it because they couldn't think of their own setting and characters. So what they do and buy a well-known franchise, change it to their liking and change the gameplay so that it barely resembles the originals.

You know, like what happened to Crash Bandicoot and Spyro...

Although, to be honest, it wasn't the gameplay that annoyed me in the more recent Crash and Spyro games, it's the fact that they messed with their personality and story, and in the case of Crash and Spyro, both failed miserably (more so with Crash).

The HD remakes on the other hand, I love that idea and it's great for those who missed the games, have since lost their original console or just want to re-live their favourite games on a new console with shiny new graphics...and for a pretty good price too.

I'm very fond of the HD remakes, without them I would have never experienced the Sly Cooper Series, now I'm Praying for a 4th!.

I'm also looking forward to the Jak and Daxter series as I've never played them but they look fun!

If we must have a remake of a classic game, a modern control scheme would be the best reason.

Nah, I still wouldn't buy SS.
The best reason for a game company to give an old installment a new paint, would be to get new players catch up with the back story of a series, so they may get all the references. That would be an adventure game or some other game with alot of old favourites making returns. For old hands there wouldn't be much to discover.

If they're adding something to it, as in more quality content, than sure.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a perfect example of a well done remake. It's now the definitive version of the game. Better in every way (though the controls could still use a little work).

However, the Ico/SotC remake is kind of... not really much of anything. It's not bad, because they source material is still amazing, but it would be kind of like re-making Oblivion. What's the fucking point?
I mean, sure, they've bumped up the resolution, and Ico adds a kind of pointless co-op thing, but these games are, what? Less than five years old? They didn't sell that well because of the rather pathetically limited release. That's something the download stores of today can fix. Re-releasing them as a retail package for full price? They needed to do more, in my opinion. The step up from Ocarina of Time 64 to Ocarina of Time 3D was a massive leap, visible in any single screenshot. If they had of gone full force and done an orchestral soundtrack, Ocarina of Time 3D would've been mindblowing. That's a solid, worth remake. Ico... with sharper textures? It's more a small hop.

Personal opinion, obviously.

There hasn't been a single reboot of a series that I'm a fan of that I've liked. I'll leave it at that.

Of remakes, I've only felt the need to investigate two. TR: Anniversary, Crystal Dynamics' take on the first Tomb Raider game, was the first. Didn't care for the quicktime events, liked what they did with secrets and some of the levels but on the whole it doesn't really match up.

The second was the fanmade Streets of Rage. No longer able to be distributed, this gem put the current state of Sega to shame. The remixed music is awesome to say the least. The graphics are pretty much the same as old, with some HQ options and extra effects thrown in and the mechanics are a perfect combination of all of the original games.

A shame that Sega didn't offer to take them onboard, because that's the kind of treatment those classic games deserve, not being re-released on mobiles and iOS.

I only care for reboots and remakes is that game that going to get the treatment is quite old and won't be updated that often. I view the update unnecessary if it only a few years old (like Ninja Gaiden) and get update a few times.

I don't mind them in video games, in fact I'm a big supporter of the HD remakes that have been popping up.

I don't mind that they rebooted Tomb Raider.

Now if we're talking about movies.....ugh. Remakes and reboots are fucking evil and should be illegal. I can't think of a single one that's ever been good.
