The dresden files are decent but one of the first vampire/werewolf series out there is the Anita Blake series by Laurrel K Hamilton. She eventually starts writing basically soft porn for some reason (just started pulling back from that in her last few books) but the first bunch of books in her series are excellent.

Check out Kelly Armstrong as well...she writes books about werewolves, witches etc.

Patricia Briggs is another good urban fantasy author as is Kim Harrison (The Hallows series...vampires, witches and werewolves) and Carrie Vaughn (the Kitty series...a different take on werewolves).

Tons of good authors out there though, that is just the tip of the iceburg.

Feed and it's sequel Deadline for great zombie books the author is Mira Grant
I second this it is a good Zombie world book, however for a good Vampire book look for Dampire by Barb & J. C. Hendee, its not so much of horror as action horror, but its good cheese vampire fun and i enjoyed it and all its sequels.

Also Abraham Lincoln Vampire hunter is both awesome and scary/funny.
hmm. for vampires i would say the Darren Shan series by Darren Shan but if you watch the movie afterwards you'll want to butcher the producer.

I'd definitely recommend World War Z, it's incredibly vivid in its descriptions and is one of the few books that has actually disturbed me enough to put it down after awhile. It is probably the quintessential zombie book of recent, but I'd also recommend you check out Earth Abides by George R. Stewart which is one of the earliest examples of what we think of as virus induced zombie apocalypse and the fall of society and our attempts to rebuild.

As far as werewolf literature, I'd recommend the novel Breathe Deeply which was one of the first novels written in conjunction with the World of Darkness universe involving the Garou (from the Werewolf: The Apocalypse table top RPG fame). It was well written and dealt very well with homosexuality amongst werewolves in an intelligent and respectful way that doesn't really ever that type of treatment. It looks like a second-rate novel intended to be nothing more then a reiteration of what was already said in the RPG book, but it really does a good job at standing on its own two feet as its own identity.
