Try out sites like Playfirst or Bigfishgames they do more simple laid back games that are often similar to sim games.

As for more console games rather than PC I'd suggest try things like:

Kingdom for Kelflings - Very sim-esque I think there' another one called world of kelflings too

The Undergarden - nice and relaxing and very basic controls and good tutorial

Stacking - Very fun little game and combat is very minor so can be good for neophytes

The Maw - It's a bit kiddy-looking but it's cute and fun

The Sly Cooper Series is a lot of fun too and again is easy to learn.

Paper Mario Thousand Year Door is great fun and very forgiving.

Ghost Trick is incredibly deep and there's no combat to learn and deal with.

The other stuff suggested sounds good too so I haven't bothered to repeat them. I tried to throw out random games as I don't know what she likes besides the sims and rift but found it confusing to learn (I did too)

ARMA 2, Falcon 4.0: Allied Force, DCS: A-10C Warthog or Grand Prix Legends would be some rather interesting choices.
You... Know of this game? This is the first time I've read "Falcon 4" outside of the flight simulator forums.

Maybe Saints Row 2? Or 3 sense it comes out very soon.

As a girl who until a couple of years ago pretty much only played the Sims, the first 'real' game i really got obsessed with was Oblivion, and from there i started playing more rpgs, like Morrowind, Fallout 3 and New Vegas (gotta love Bethesda!!) - also Bioware rpgs. However, i am a complete geek, so maybe your girl won't like those games as much as i did! I think some people also mentioned Minecraft - i think that also might be a good bet: if she likes the Sims games, they've got an element of creativity which i think she'll find in Minecraft as well.

Most race games don't have very complicated controls, or maybe GTA.
Even a six-year-old can do that.

Since she's a fan of Sims...

Dwarf Fortress?
Lol, while I approve of the suggestion because DF > Minecraft IMO it is a really hard game to get into due to the overly clumsy interface and Ascii graphics.

Might be worth trying an adventure game of some sort. Plenty to choose from ranging from simple point and click to first person stuff. Longest Journey was an instant hook for my wife. You then couldn't get her off the PC and she just devoured adventure games. Then she started playing Final Fantasy 10 then 7 and I could no longer game on the consoles :/

EDIT:OOps no not Longest Journey, the hook was Day Of The Tentacle, she used to play that once a year as she loved it so much.
Yeah The Longest Journey came first, then Dreamfall: The Longest Journey was the sequel. The benefit of Dreamfall is that it's probably a lot easier to get into because it doesn't have any of the frustrating 'pixel hunting' type puzzles of the older adventure games, but rather is more on par with something like Zelda.

Speaking of the series it really sucks that there hasn't been a final game to the trilogy yet, with Dreamfall playing the 'Empire Strikes Back' role and ending on a huge cliffhanger.

If she's anything like mine, you should just leave steam open and go out for a bit. My g/f likes to pretend vocally that video games are for losers, but can be 'caught' playing many games if left alone. I just say "hey i got this game i thought you might like. It's called X and you do (insert gameplay mechanic here)" and then leave for awhile. Come back and say 'no babe, it's fine, you have fun' when she asks if you want your computer back.

Just the other day she was visiting at her dads and called me to say she had found her old N64 and forgot how much she loved Zelda OOT. Well of course she loved it. Everyone did! I just can never ever mock her for noticing the hypocrisy or she will never touch a game again.

If she likes the Sims, I'd recommend Minecraft or perhaps Spore. Sure Spore wasn't the godsend they made it out to be, but it is a good way to kill a few hours.
If you want something a little deeper than the Sims, yet easy to learn, I'd recommend RuneScape. It's cheap, or even free, and most the girls I play games with either play that or started out on it. WoW is also extremely accessible to new players, and has a free version.

Plants vs. Zombies seems to be popular with the ladies.
Yeah, I'd recommend any Popcap games, for me though it would be Peggle. Even my grandmother could understand that game.

Wait, wait, wait... WHY is this degenerating into who can throw out the most casual game after the other? Okay... She couldn't get a grip on the mechanics of RIFT, because RIFT is a slightly advanced MMO due to the way that the class system works, but it's overall pretty simple. Go with another MMO, possibly WoW as that's very easy to get into.

Otherwise, bring out a proper game? A shooter, any shooter. Every half ass idiot knows how to use a mouse (I hope..), or just give her some more time with RIFT? Because.. Sims, Minecraft, and Plant vs. Zombies is just.. eugh.. Or simply kick it up a notch, and do like my girlfriend, play something with gore and explosions. Because there simply isn't better.

If you go for easy game mechanics, she will end up sticking with that. Throw her headfirst into the water with sharks and give her some game that takes a bit to learn, preferrably something that's actually FUN. Take ANY shooter, that's easy.

There's no need to have your girlfriend play a game that requires she got the brain the size of an inbred bird, because you know... She can think and all, I assume. Go for a proper game, there's only a few hundred thousands.

I would be willing to bet she could figure Portal out pretty quickly, the gameplay really isn't too difficult to get your head around.
Go all out and get Orange Box. After Portal, Half Life shouldn't be to big a stretch and then she will be ready for TF2 (which if Free2Play now). That way you can game together -- or against each other.

Otherwise, I liked Night Sky. It's a very moody platforming puzzle game with a ball.
Loads of fun.

I was about to rage out on this thread until I read your post. THANK YOU for posting this. It's not because she's a girl that she'll only enjoy casual games.

OT : Besides, you can make her play whatever game you think she might enjoy and turn the difficulty down to the lowest and I bet she'll enjoy herself.
If she liked the look of Rift, then Dragon Age for sure. When played on easy, it's REALLY easy, and no girl can resist Alistair. No, really.

Portal and Left 4 Dead
for some reason chicks really like those games. I mean, don't get me wrong, they're amazing games. . . once.

Also, Peggle, and any other PopCap game

An unfortunately innacurate assumption :p

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Think we're going to try torchlight and Bastion for some RPG & questing elements. We'll try Cargo too because it looks... Interesting!

What this man said. I just played the demo, and I want it nao Also, all my friends who have played the game, say that it's one of the best they have played all year. It's simple, accessible, and quirky. =]

Edit: Also, TF2. It's free, and ridiculously fun.

World of Warcraft(PC). one of the most straight forward RPGs out there. you can play level 1-20 for free, now that they've introduced the 'free-to-play' trial.

Torchlight(PC). good dungeon crawler RPG, but not really heavy set on the RPG element. playes a lot like the old dungeon seige and diablo games.

Bayonetta (xbox360) DMC... but with a female lead that any real woman will relate to and enjoy. Is now my GF most favorate game in all existance.

Left4Dead (PC). Great FPS that can be played competatively and casually. Play it slowly and take your time for the best effect.

This question was just crossing my mind, the first thing that came to mind is Mass Effect - its got a strong story, the characters are well developed, the combat isn't really anything more complicated than "point and shoot" and its got a bit of romance thrown in too.

i've convinced myself, I'm gonna try to get her to play it this weekend.
