if your in the mood for a long term investment The wheel of time by Robert Jordan.

if you want an excellent book you may not have come across Perfume by Patrick Suskind(the titles misleading we'll leave it at that).

if you want a recomendation by "That guy" Moby Dick by Herman Melville

if your a neurotic antisocial fan of music and hopless with relationships then High Fidelity by Nick Hornby is for you

if you want a challenge In the skin of a lion by Michael Ondaatje

(these are all my favorite books but they don't come up often on the escapist, except in the skin of a lion thats just challengeing)

Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan/ Brandon Sanderson for epicness and serious story.

Discworld for shorter, faster stories with loads of humor, but a surprising amount of satire/depth/philosophy.

Read them all thoroughly and come back again next year ;)

Anything Warhammer 40k by Dan Abnett will entertain, i highly reccomend his two series 'Gaunts Ghosts' (Sharpe in space) and Eisenhorn. If you decide you like the 40k Universe check out the Commisar Cain series (Flashman/Blackadder in space)

For heavy duty fantasy try Steven Eriksons 'Malazan' Series, for more Visceral stuff anything by Joe Abercrombie is good.

For regular sci fi anything by Iain M Banks, Neal Asher or Alistair Reynolds is good.

This is personal...avoid Terry Goodkind (too long winded and political in later books, unless you are in love with Ayn Rand) and David Eddings (unless you are ok with characters that manfully accept their fate instead of trying to do things their own way).

Now, if you share my opinions above you will love 'Un Lun Dun' by China Mieville

Judging by your list of books I'd guess that you're in your early teens. Bearing that & your obvious taste for magic & science fiction in mind, I suggest these authors:

Jeff Noon & William Gibson are both excellent writers of cyberpunk.

Franz Kafka could be considered the original writer of modern, paranoid fiction with titles like Metamorphosis & The Trial. He's widely acknowledged to have had a huge influence on many famous writers like Asimov (I Robot), Dick (A Scanner Darkly), & Huxley (Brave New World).

Philip K Dick is similarly dark & bizarre, particularly The Man in the High Castle or The Game-players of Titan.

For something darker & more mature you might want to try:

William Burroughs, famous for many titles, but most notably The Naked Lunch.

Kurt Vonnegut is an excellent social satirist of great depth e.g. Player Piano, Galapagos, & Slaughterhouse Five.

George Orwell is world famous for many works including 1984, which is a chilling account of the worst things that could happen to humanity, many of which have already occurred in some Western nations.

Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf is definitive. It's the original story of an honourable warrior in a world of magic & dragons. Don't be put off by Neil Gaiman's atrocious & racist film script, it has no relevance or resemblance to the book.

No Chronicles of Amber? SHAAAAAMMMMMEEEE

Zelazny is a brilliant writer that all fantasy lovers should check out. It sounds like from your library that you would love his books.

If you though Bioshock had an interesting story, I'd recommend checking out Atlas Shrugged. It's a bit long, but it is good.

Anything by Iain M Banks.

But, seeing as you're a gamer, probably start off with The Player of Games. It's about one heck of a high stakes game of Civ 5.

Hmmm, that's an excellent list to choose from in your original post. I'll certainly check a few more of those out.

As for my recommendation, go for Markus Zusak's The Book Thief. It was really something special.

The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi.

While it has a strong martial arts theme, I still consider it one of the best inner strength books ever. I read it once a month. Example, the offensive line coordinator for Hope College ( 5 time national champions) requires that all players on the offensive line must read it before every season.

Anything by Terry Pratchett. Or you could try the Strain and the Fall by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. OR, if we're feeling really crazy, check out Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer.
