Wow almost forgot Terminator: The Sarah Connor Cronicles. Better than the 4 movies combined.

Drama:
-Mad Men
-The Wire
-Deadwood

Action Comedy:
-Chuck (my favorite show on television. Lots of callbacks to the 80's. GREAT guest stars. Great action. Lots of video game references. Great music.)
-Eureka

Comedy:
-The Office (seasons 1-3 especially)
-Community (it's crazy how consistently good this show is)
-Arrested Development
-Parks and Recreation (season 2 especially. The first two seasons are on Netflix)
-It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
-Louie (it's kind of grim too, but very good)
-NewsRadio
-Party Down

Science Fiction:
-Eureka
-Lost
-Heroes (Season 1, then stop watching)
-Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

That's all I can come up with right now.

If you like comedy, check out It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Seconded!! I fucking love this show! It's just full of my style of depraived black humor.
Louie [http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Louie_Season_1/70144321?trkid=2361637] is doing true black humor the best right now. It makes me laugh even while making life seem miserable.

I recommend the first five seasons of lost. Well, maybe the first four seasons. Then stop watching and make up your own ending.

To recommend some shows that probably wouldn't get recommended otherwise, here are some short ones that were Too Good To Last as TV tropes says. My So Called Life, honestly it's one of the best TV dramas I've ever seen. Popular, this show was a great parody for its time, I'm not sure how it may have aged, but it was pretty funny during its run. A longer series I'd recommend would be Roswell, the first season is pretty nice Sci-Fi. Towards the end it starts to get a bit dodgy and eventually canceled to make room for Smallville.

I just finished watching season 5 of Dexter and now have nothing to watch :( sooooooooo I was hoping you fine gentlemen from the lands of escapistmagazine.com would be able to share your T.V wisdom with me. My favorite series have been prison break, dexter, and battle star galatica. I'm not a big fan of anime. THANK YOU GENTLEMEN.
Community. Show started on NBC and it is hilarious, stars the guy who used to host Talk Soup way back when.

Plus, I recently found the entire first season for $15 dollars at Best Buy. Not sure if that sale is still on, but it'd probably be one of the best investments you make.

ALL 8 SEASONS OF 24! GO DO IT NOW!!!
A season of 24 go's for about 18 hours *dissapointment face*
it will still take you around 7 days to complete. Plus the other 15 minutes is commercial time. So it feels like it's in real time on the t.v. But not so much on a computer. Still it's worth all those 7 days.
I finished Season five in two days. I only stopped for eight hours of sleep and to go to a three hour class.

My vote goes for The Shield. I'd also recommend The Sopranos, 24, The X Files, and the short but sweet BoomTown.

Oh, and if memory serves me, The Twilight Zone from the 80s wasn't too bad either.

The Wire. Probably the most well-written show I've ever seen. Sometimes it feels like you're watching a documentary instead of a scripted show. It's brilliant.

But whatever you do, DO NOT watch The Walking Dead. Just because it's got zombies, it's extremely overrated. The first 3 episodes were okay I guess. But then it gets really lame. Also, the acting is pretty weak, and they randomly kill off characters when there's nothing better to do (probably because AMC doesn't have the budget for a large cast). It was just a massive disappointment in the end.

Also, I was wondering why tosh.0 was still on the air, but I guess people apparently like it. That confuses the hell out of me. How is it any different than just watching random shit on youtube. Daniel Tosh is not funny.
