I don't own a PSP (that is a vita, right? May have got this wrong), but there is a game that looks really interesting enough that I am hoping it gets a PSN release, called Yomawari: Night Alone. An interesting horror. Here's a little let's play snippet that may help;
The PSP was Sony's first handheld, the Vita is the second generation. As for Yomawari, it's available for PC and Vita.

FF Dissidia Duodecim
this entirely changed my outlook on fighting/rpg style games, I was floored with how well the game was with only one joystick, and the 3D dimension was *fantastic*, I'm very upset this game hasn't made it to a console/pc, being able to have 2 joysticks plus a much bigger game would make it even more phenomenal.

That said, you have to enjoy final fantasy a bit, otherwise I feel like you won't understand some of the backstory/cheesiness.

Ah okis, thanks for the info, I didn't realise there were multiple Sony handhelds :) At least the PC crowd gets it too :p

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Jeanne D'Arc. Its a tactics game kinda like final fantasy tactics. It's very loosely based on Joan of arc and the story is quite good and goes someplaces I wasn't expecting from the light hearten art style.

They are making a new dissidia for arcades which will.

As a competitive fighting game player, I would classify dissidia as more of a battle game than strictly a fighter. It is more about dancing around huge projectiles and attacks tend to be hit this or that button 3 times and watch sparks fly. It is a very unique game though and a great one, as a huge FF fan I imported it from Japan even to get orginal voices. Chaos was voiced by Norio Wakamoto (Cell from DBZ), Squall was Itachi from Naruto, Terra was Nia from Gurren Lagann, Tidus was Ichigo from Bleach, Shantoto was Ayanami Rei from Evangelion, Prishe was freakin Susumiya Haruhi! This all from the top of my head too. Absolutely top tier voices abound.

If you enjoyed Valkyria Chonicles, the second and third ones on PSP are also pretty good. While the second one is in English, the third one is Japanese only. Although there is a fan translation patch/ISO available online somewhere. I think the third is actually my favourite so far for it's "Dirty Dozen" premise alone.

The two PSP God of War games are fantastic, probably my favourite of the series. Although I played the HD versions and not the originals, so not sure how they hold up there.

Metal Gear Portable Ops is great fun if you are a fan of the series. It plays much more like the older PS2 titles, with a very early version of the eventual Peace Walker/MGS5 soldier collection mechanic. Story is decent, and I believe somewhat canon to the series.

I would also recommend Peace Walker, but that has had a HD re-release so you may have played it elsewhere. If not, definitely get it as it is a sublime portable title. It's pretty much Metal Gear 5 before 5 was a thing, with a full canon story with Hideo at the helm.

There is a Megaman 1 remake that's PSP exclusive, if you're into platformers that is a must have.

There are also a God of War and a GTA game for it, but I rarely ever hear about them.

Now when it comes to major games, hidden gems and such, Youtuber MetalJesusRocks got you covered:

It looks a little intimidating and overwhelming at first, but his videos are really addicting.

Probably not to your tastes, but the PSP does have one of the best versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, which is my personal favourite Street Fighter game and 1v1 fighting game all round.

Has no one recommended Crisis Core? I admit that I was largely skimming this thread, but I don't think I saw Crisis Core mentioned once.

Especially if you love Final Fantasy 7, Crisis Core let's you play as Zack Fair and find out who he is. He's actually became a huge fan favorite as a result of Crisis Core and I understand why. It's a solid Action RPG and looks gorgeous. If I had any complaints it would be that the DMW system makes it effectively impossible to control Limits and Summons. On the other hand, it's used beautifully in the game's ending.

agreed, I didn't know exactly how to label it at the time (I'm not a fighting game fan, so the fact that it roped me in to putting over 150 hours into it probably goes to show it's not much of a traditional fighting game)

I don't mind watching anime's in sub (hence I know those are some top tier VA), but I don't think I'll ever play a japenese game, I don't plan on learning the language anytime soon and it'd annoy me greatly not being able to read things.
