Try Xcom:Enemy Unknown...

Turn base tactic with grand strategic elements (and it's a little bit of rogue-likeish if you turn on iron man, but that's sort of debatable)

It's occupying most of my time right now, and there is a mod that adds a ton more. (Though I personally am playing it the first time on classic un-modded to get a basic feel of everything since this is my first Xcom game)

Edit: crap... you mean an rpg. Well xcom technically does have an rpg element though. (though very little compare to what has been said in this thread to be fair)

Alright, well...

If you do not mind ASCII graphics, I recommend Catacylsm:DDA... it's alot like fallout, expect with permadeath along with a much bigger focus on survival. Though be warned, the system it has is much more complex than Fallout. (And I am probably talking about all of them)

There is also Stalker with the misery mod. (which is not really like fallout imo) but the mod has installed a class system where you can specialize in different weapon types (sniper is good at long range stuff like snipers, assualt is good at medium range weapons like rifles, and recon is good at cqb like smg and carbine), along with differences like the sniper class has certain perks like begin able to sell your loots at a much higher price. (edit2: this is incorrect, you get more loots from animals. Just remembered :p) This is probably what I am going to play once I upgrade my rig so it doesn't freeze every other second, but be warned also though, the game is fairly merciless until you get good enough equipment

Both these games have a heavy focus on exploration, since they are essential to the player survival. But as I stated before, both these games have a fairly ruthless world/setting. Also both these games take their real life simulation pretty seriously.

I'd say check out the various games by Spiderweb Software. I personally am a huge fan of the Avernum and Geneforge sagas and would recommend them. The Geneforge saga is available on Steam for $20 normally (Though it seems it's only $4 now until the 11th) and you can find Avernums 4-6 and the remake Avernum: Escape from the Pit on Steam for $12 and $10 respectively. You can also find Nethergate: Resurrection on Steam for $5 and the Avadon games for $10 each, also on Steam. Though if you want a REAL deal, head to GOG to get all SIX of the original Avernum games for just $12. And they're pretty large games too.

Still not convinced? Head to Spiderweb Software's website, located at this blue link here [http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/] and you'll not only find all of their games, but DEMOS for all of their games. And they ain't dinky demos either... some demos can consume up to a full quarter of the full game, giving you more of a taste than you would get from most other demos and games out there.

Personally, I'd suggest Geneforge and Avernum. Geneforge I'd suggest due to the interesting setting and the various themes and ideas it brings up, complete with a "nobody is really good" kind of morality system for various sides to choose, and multiple endings. Avernum I would suggest for the world it makes, and there's a fair bit of exploration in some of the games as well. A bit cliche in the monsters maybe, but the world is interesting enough.
