So I?ve just come back from a Tesco Metro where I bought a few things (pasta, quorn, cheese salad) and when I got to the till the total came to £8.60 so I handed over a £10.00 note then asked about getting a club-card. The cashier gave me a leaflet about it while telling me how to activate it then gave me my change. It looked like I was getting too much so I didn't say anything and checked after leaving the store. I got £21.00 back in total so I checked the receipt and it clearly says ?CHANGE DUE: £1.40? but I think I?m going to keep the money as it?s not really stealing. Have you ever received more money back than you should have been given? If not, would you keep the extra money if you were in a similar situation?

P.S. I am a student at university so I do need the money :)

Maybe in asking about the club-card you accidentally said some secret code-phrase? I don't know what secret society you've now joined, but it can't be that bad if members just randomly give you more change than they should.

I have kept extra money like that before.
I went to the gas station, bought a couple things, the total was $5.25.
I paid with a $10 bill, they gave me $7.50 back. Which, is obviously more then they should've given me. As long as the amount is fairly small, I'll keep it. There was one time though, where the cashier gave me $35 in change, when all they owed me was $1.25. I informed them of the HUGE mistake, because I wouldn't feel right keeping that much extra.

For an amount like THAT, I would say something. That cashier is in some pretty deep shit right now, and I can promise you that.

for about, oh, $3 or less, who cares.

Only if its intentional. Rounding and laziness are the usual motivations, though I managed to flirt my way into cheap breakfast at this one deli. That was pretty awesome, $1-2 for a Taylor hame and cheese and a drink.

As someone who was a cashier I can tell you that 19 bucks low on the register is very, very, very ugly. I've never been more than 2 cents off but if it was around even a few bucks I'd be pissed and maybe questioned by my employer. Not good things.

You shouldn't have been a greedy prick.

the only change i have received more than I should are usually when I got a cheap portion of chips when i was back at school. once paid £1.50 for a portion of chips and a sausage (Costs £1.40) got 60p back.
it I got change any more than £5 extra I would say something. Don't want to get them in trouble for giving out money.

I always let them know they gave me too much, because people often get fired if the till has less money than it should.
