Here's a variation on monopoly I picked up from a certain Shackleford Hurtmore in the comments section on basic instructions.

"'The 1% Monopoly'. Anytime you pass Go and you have the most money, you get to "lobby government" to change any existing rule in your favour (e.g. negative community chest cards don't affect the owner of Mayfair). There has been a lot of crying, and I had to pepper spray my youngest when he complained it wasn't fair, but I think they are learning a valuable life lesson."

Ever heard of Spy alley? In the game, you're spy and nobody knows each other's identity. So you have to find out your foes identity, while hiding your own, while trying to get all the items needed to go trough the safe spot.

Me and some friends love this game, as it gets hilarous when we talk and plot and hide our true indentities with red herrings. Also, in my country the game is simply named "Spion" (which means spy).

Hero quest is a good one. Its kinda like a very basic version of D&D. the characters and quests are already made. you just pick one and set up the board like it tells you.

All mine have been reccomended, but I'll second:
Settlers of Catan
Risk
Diplomacy

All very fun games that are guaranteed to tear your friends and family apart!

However, when you talk about Roleplaying Board games, the only thing that popped into my head was the Night of Mystery series.

Basically it's like getting all your friends together and playing out Agatha Christie novels.

Twilight Imperium - civilisation as a boardgame, in space!
Dominion - awesome quick-to-learn card/boardgame
Family Business - as Dominion, less advanced though.

Battleships!
Cram all of that original goodness in before Activision swing round and crush nostalgia under their shoe of greed.

Dr. Tran's Peanut Butter Square Hula Quest?

No but really, Apples to apples is pretty darn fun, monopoly, Munchkin, or betrayal at the house on the Hill. All pretty good and fun for large groups.

Good luck getting non-board gamers to play an RPG style board game. Those types of games tend to be a little more in-depth.

Anyway, smallworld is pretty straightforward with a lot of fantasy elements. It would be good for those who don't play too many board games.

For just a fun time, try Junta. It needs a lot of players and is fairly involved, but it comes with absurd amounts of alliances and backstabbing and a little bit of warfare. It's a good time if you don't mind making your whole family furious at each other for an afternoon.

I'll recommend "Dominion", like someone else did. It's DAMN good. And if you really like it, you can get expansions that add more cards (and thus even MORE possible game types to the game).

My friends and I have been playing that for a LONG time (over 2 years) and we haven't gotten tired of it yet. There are so many awesome setups for cards you can use, and it's also fun to just randomize the cards and make the best of it.

Arkham Horror
Oh gosh...Arkham horror...

Only get that if you want a REALLY hard game. It's REALLY fun, but holy crap is it hard. I've played it about 4 times, and we've only won once, and even then it took up 8 hours and we BARELY made it through..

Then again, the last 2 times we played it was with the Dunwich expansion, which made it totally impossible. (yeah, don't get Dunwich. Not unless you're so pro at this game that you want it to be nearly impossible)

My favorite games (and those liked by my non gaming family):

Settlers of Catan: A must if you haven't played it yet and soon to be a modern classic.

Axis and Allies: A great military strategy game like risk only much more strategic. (though this one is a hit or miss with many people).

Apples to Apples: A great party game with a group of friends. Also check out scattegories.

Memoir 44: A great simple World War II tactics board game its a funny easy game to play.

Fluxx: Just discovered this game this card game, its awesome.

If you want to look at any of these games check out www.boardgamegeek.com

Since bang and ticket to ride were mentioned I am gonna go with these ones:

Ubongo. Tetris with jewels.

Blokus, strategic and colorful.

UNO. Everybody plays it.

Othello. Like chess but faster.

Alot of good choices, im glad some of the best ones have already been mentioned so let me throw more votes in for those.

Betrayal at the House on the Hill

Settlers of Catan

Munchkin

My friends and are can never get bored playing these games. We do however take breaks in between sessions when we start getting angry about plotting against each other, haha. But these are some of the greatest board games ever invented.

I appreciate you said semi-obscure games, but there is no better way to ruin friendships and family relations than monopoly. WE PLAYED FOR 5 HOURS. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO HUMILIATED IN MY LIFE.

I went from owning Mayfair and Park Lane, with 2 houses on each, plus a load more, to having nothing but utilities and transport. I had to watch my friends win on the crumbled remains of my empire as I haemorrhaged money.

I now refuse to lend my friends any money, in case they pull the same stunt in real-life.

Settlers of Catan!

If there are a bunch of you who are serious about sitting down for a few hours to have a fun game, this is the one for you! Me and my mates have played long into the night with this, and we have all the expansions! It's great fun!

That is the standard version... The expansions are better as you can create scenarios as you see fit, and the game is made so that you can slightly change rules if you need to, or create it as you need to!

I propose Munchkin, Dominion, and RISK. All three are good games, although the last can ruin friendships. 0.o
