Um...shouldn't people be naming games other than Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, and Advance Wars, considering he said something like Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, and Advance Wars? It makes me think no one read the OP.

I used to play "Heroes of Might & Magic III", it's a pretty good turn based fantasy strategy game.

I'm a huge fan of Intelligent Systems: developers of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. For a while I've been playing Battle for Wesnoth and i found myself wishing there were more games like this. Are there any out there you'd recommend?

I'm looking for something more Advance Wars/Fire Emblem/Final Fantasy Tactics than Galactic Civilizations: something with instant recruitment or an army of characters to level up without any research or civilization planning to bog down the action. Setting's not important: it can be historical, fantasy, or sci-fi. Oh, and it has to be on the PC or DS, and something besides the aforementioned series, please.

Bonus points, however, if someone can recommend me something more Warhammer 40K-esque. Thanks.
Company of heroes, or World In Conflict.
-Edit- Nvm, you said turnbased... sorry
Phantasy Star Universe, and Escape from Paradise City.
And for the DS (if you get past the underlying Christian themes) I quite enjoyed Luminous Arc.

For the PC: Disciples 2.
Sweet game, and really cheap right now.
Disciples 2 with all of it's expansions is only $10 at Target. Great game for a great price.

Only games coming to mind that are remotely WH40Kish are the old MechWarrior games (the RPGs, not the sims) or FallOut Tactics (which I never played so can't recommend.) May just have to wait for the next Advanced Wars game.

Well there is a DS and PSP Turn Based Warhammer 40k Strat Game, and it looks amazing on the ds, more then the psp. Really utilizes the dual screens, and is very Jagged Allianceisque with its commands.

Here is the Gamestop Link, sadly its not aviable online.

Next up is Disgaea for the DS. A wonderful, amazing, hilarious Turn based Strat game.

These i both highly recommend.

I've seen some suggestions for the Civ games, but I'm not sure if they're really up your alley. If they are, you might also give Galactic Civilizations from Stardock Games a shot.

The only DS game I can see myself playing until Scribblenauts finally comes out is Disgaea. I can finally understand what all the hubbub over that game is about. It's crazy deep in its character customization and equipment options. There are so many different things to be doing in that game, from staging votes to the demonic council for better gear and bonuses to leveling up your equipment by going 'into' it in the item world. The story is also rather cute and fun. Overall, I'd say it's my favorite DS game since the Phoenix Wright games, which is saying a lot.

The Fire Emblem games. There's three GBA games and a couple of DS ones that can all be played on the DS, and I'd recommend each and every one of them.

EDIT: Since I somehow missed the Fire Emblem thing when I was reading the OP, I'll recommend some other stuff, but they're older, GBA titles. Obviously still playable on the DS, but old nonetheless.

Anyway, Tactics Ogre and Yggdra Union.
Tactics Ogre is awesome, but not for the DS or PC like he requested.
Honestly, I can't think of a single game that you did not mention that would fit your criteria.

Jagged Alliance, UFO: Enemy Unknown, Silent Storm.

Master of Orion. It's technically the same genre as Galactic Civilizations (4X), but don't let it stop you. Like you, I hate fiddly, mechanical micromanagement like that in every Civ. I'm recommending MOO because it has virtually all micromanagement crap cut out. You basically never leave the main galaxy screen into tiny submenus except when you want to design a new ship or need to pick a new research subject. Note that this applies to the first MOO only, not the sequels which were bogged down in typical 4X fashion.

Welcome to the Escapist, where 75% read the title and only the title. Of the 25% that go beyond the title, about another 75% don't read beyond the first or second post.

Also the list threads.

Anyway...this is a question I'm curious about as well. I read the title and thought "omg advance wars fire emblem FFT!"...and then read the OP.

However, the Shining Force game for GBA wasn't bad...I only owned it briefly and thought Fire Emblem was better, but I was also a lot pickier back then...

I don't know about DS games, but LOTR The Third Age was a good turnbased strategy game for the Gameboy Advance/SP. Imagine Sacred Stones with a LOTR skin/dif maps. Unfortunately less character-customization since the majority of the soldiers you command are just regular throw-away units you'll never see again.

Though I can't think of many turn-based games for the PC that aren't just flash games (chess maybe...). If you were willing to look at RTS though (which is a lot like turn-based, I mean you can just keep hitting Pause-Unpause...) I'd highly recommend Company of Heroes.

For PC: Shattered Union and Hearts of Iron.
Shape the course of history the way you want...
Erase all of Germanys tactical mistakes or start D-Day 5 years earlyer and chrush Europe and the Soviet Union in your own version of the Blitzkrieg...it´s never been funner.
And a third part is in the making/released, i dunno, but i bet its even better then the first two.

For DS: Advance Wars...i loved the first one but never got around buying the following parts because my GBA went MIA and now the CIA want to FMA with DMRs and stuff...
Just FYI.

Sword of the stars would be perfect if your into 4X games, even if you don't like 4X games give this one a try, its the only one I actually like.

Its set in a procedurally generated 3D universe in which you can design ships and can use them in tactical combat when you attack an enemy.

PS: get the expansions to, they add a lot to the game.
