I LOVE horror films, but there have been few times when I have truly been scared of creeped out by what I have watched. Can the people of the Escapist reccomend me some scary films?
It doesnt matter what country the film was made in.
I would recommend the movie "Aliens". It's the second movie in the aliens franchise, first one got incoherent at the end while the latter ones felt that horror had become optional.

Depends what scares you really... I am freaked out by paranormal, nothing else really creeps me out so I will suggest Paranormal Activity. Scariest hour and a half of my life! Couldn;t sleep for days after that... 'shudders'

And if not that then Evil Dead 1 and 2??? Just cause they're classics :)

If you want genuinely creepy horror instead of pure shock value, check out 1408. It's the best scary movie I've seen in a long time.

A Tale of Two Sisters is a good Korean horror film. Won't scare the crap out of you, but it is very well made. Not sure if that one got the crappy English remake treatment...

Uzumaki. This is one of the only movies that kept me up at night, and proves that something can be so weird that it surpasses silly and becomes downright terrifying.

Most of the suggestions here are good, check them out. [REC] in particular.

Other than that, it's hard to know what works for you. I know Session 9 left me in scared-shitless state for DAYS, but that's just because it was disturbing, just like Kairo (not Pulse - that's the bad American remake), but some people say they're boring, that nothing scary happens. If you're looking for some relentless horror and some good scares, you're in luck - there are a lot of good horror films because all they need is a small budget and a very very good director. On the other hand, if you want some creepy and atmospheric mindfuck, there are the above-mentioned movies, Jacob's Ladder, 1408, Let the Right One In, etc.

If you want something more visceral, you should really check out the "new wave of the French extreme", a kind of French horror movie fad in the latest years that spawned some awesome movies: Martyrs, Haute Tension, À l'intérieur, maybe Sheitan (I didn't like it). If you REALLY want to go into traumatic territory, watch Gaspar Noé's Irreversible - it's not a horror movie, but it's one of the most horrific experiences I've ever had.

You shouldn't avoid "western" movies, like some posters suggested, since it might just be the kind of horror that works for you. I'd recommend The Descent (it has almost become a classic by now), The Last House on the Left (remake, amazing direction), The Hills Have Eyes (also remake, also awesome), Feast (best horror-comedy I've ever seen), Pandorum (a recent well-reviewed sci-fi horror), Paranormal Activity (you either hate it or you love it), Wolf Creek, Dead Silence, loads of others that I can't currently think of.

If you like zombies, which almost have a genre in itself, you might want to try 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, The Crazies, Pontypool, Shaun of the Dead (warning, exceptionally good comedy), and then all the older zombie movies if you find out you like these.

As for eastern horror movies, I'd recommend you look around this site, Snowblood Apple: http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/index2.htm
It has a nice list of all the major Asian horror movies.

EDIT: Oh, right, I forgot the basics - Alien (the first one), The Thing, The Exorcist. Don't you forget these three.

Also, if you prefer "softcore" horror, there's a number of very good thrillers. Basically, they have more story and just tension instead of real horror, but since they get bigger budgets and more famous directors/actors, they tend to turn out good: The Others, El orfanato, El espinazo del diablo, El laberinto del fauno (all of these are from del Toro, he's a master of the genre), Panic Room, and I'd say The Ring remake qualifies.

Yep - I'd go for Paranormal Activity, it's pretty good if you like 'reality' style horror films.

Also:

The Others,
Pans Labyrinth (although that's more fantasy horror)

If you like psychological thrills, then check out these ones. Not all of them are 'horror', but thrilling and haunting nontheless:

Paranormal Activity (really, it's a must see)
The Exorcist
Event Horizon
The Orphanage
The Others
What lies beneath (predictable, but still good)

Non-English Movies:
A Tale of two Sisters (starts out weird and gets really evil)
Nightwatch (the danish one, NOT the russian thingy with the same name)
Nightmare Detective

It's easily one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, though avoid the second one. It's just awful and almost ruins the first one.

There is this one movie I saw a few years back called "T.H.E.Y." (I think) that was pretty scary to me. It's about huge insectoid critters from alternate dimension who mark children and then come back to eat them years later.

I rented and watched it during a small hurricane years ago, that movie it was a pretty good movie. I think it was also made be Wes Craven. I loved the ending which I am not going to spoil here for the people who have not watched it yet.

Another film, which I do not know if you would call it horror, that won an oscar was Silence of the Lambs. Silence of the Lambs was not really scary except for the part in the basement of the killers house.

I like that people were scared by Paranormal Activity, and glad that I wasn't the only one pussified by that film. But I also liked Blair Witch, Cloverfield, REC, REC 2, even Quarantine. But some people just don't respond to these movies at all. :( I don't get it.

Memories of this film kept me awake during nightshifts, and yes the ending is pretty cool. Don't think any other horror movie scared me as much (but that's just me).
(Could be Wes Craven, though I only saw it once and it was back in 2003-2004 so my memory is abit fuzzy)
