Code Geass is pretty good.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is also good, but make sure you get the movies or else you won't know what the fuck is going on at the end.

Both Fullmetal Alchemist series are a good choice. If you're going to watch both watch the first one first then Brotherhood. The first 15 episodes of Brotherhood cover the same plot point as the first 30 of the first anime, but not as well, but sets up its own plot while doing it so you can't really skip them.

Also Gurren Lagann, sense your into mecha.

If you like mechs you might like Neon Genesis Evangelion. Good series but I had no idea what was happening at the end.

Pokemon. It cannot be beaten.
I'd strongly recommend Clone High too, even though it's not an anime.

On that subject, why does everyone always ask to be recommended anime rather than just stuff to watch in general?

Evangelion is notable for being a deconstruction of Japan's normal Mecha formula with most of the characters behaving in much more believable ways than they would otherwise. Shinji specifically is rather realistically distraught by the actions of an extremely detached and uncaring father.

The problem is less that Shinji is overemotional and more that the emotional journeys in Evangelion are overplayed. More time is spent developing character than is strictly necessary, especially in a genre which, traditionally, is highly focused on plot and action.

The new reboot of the series is widely seen as having a better balance between character and action (although many purists see it as a shameless cash in on the brand), and many of the characters (notably Shinji and Asuka) have been revamped to be deconstructions of newer character archetypes.

My standard answer nowadays is El-Hazard: The Magnificent World. Though Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki! is pretty good too.
