Franz Ferdinand is good, like others have said. Personally my favorite song is an orchestral one that most people haven't heard of, called Nara. The theme at 1:20 is epic, in the truest sense of the word.

I don't think Bad Religion have ever done a song I didn't want to listen to repeatedly.

Franz Ferdinand, Ratatat, The Tumbled Sea.

That is all.
Franz Ferdinand?
Alternative?
Noooooo. No no no.

Ontopic, take a look around http://planet.mu/ . It's a record store but you can buy mp3 albums off there. There's some really good musicians there and you can sample the songs as much as you like.

If you want actual band names:

-Twice Too Many (idm, electronica)
-Venetian Snares (breakcore, glitchcore, hardcore electronica) (fucking amazing)
-Animals As Leaders (prog-metal, jazz-fusion, idm)
-Mundtot (industrial, electronica)
-Jega (glitch, electronica, experimental)
-Skelic (glitch, darkstep, industrial, experimental, breakcore... etc)
-Panzerballet (death jazz, funk)
-Radiohead (electronica)
-Starfucker (light electronica/rockish)
-That 1 Guy (electronica/comedy)
-Scale The Summit (prog-metal, brightmetal)
-Nine Inch Nails (industrial, experimental) (listen to the ghosts album)
-Immelmann (industrial/ambient/mechanic/experimental) (just one ep, it's called mire if you're having trouble finding it)
-Tally Hall (light rock/experimental)
-The Avalanches (no fucking clue)

All of which are worth a listen. :>

I think Elbow is considered alternative... at least here in the States they are.
So first, here's one of their more "rock-style" songs...
And here's one of their slower songs (which are absolutely beautiful, in my opinion).
Browse for more and enjoy.

Alright here's my list.

Hope I helped you find something new to listen to. This thread has reminded me I need to get some Smashing Pumpkins songs. Away!

I knew you'd be on this thread. As a side note, as I read "Franz Ferdinand", it starts playing on the radio...
and for my 2 cents: Gomez Faunts The Dead Weather..? The Doors..? Most artists on "The Matrix" soundtracks..? A little bit of John Butler Trio Massive Attack The Mint Chicks The Phoenix Foundation Portable Folk Band Queens of the Stone Age are actually very weird, might be worth a look Radiohead wouldn't be generic if they didn't create their own genre with so many albums, so would coldplay The Verve kinda not really And The White Stripes because they are fuckin strange.

Download the album "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel right now. It's completely unlike anything else I've ever heard, and it's completely amazing.

Circa Survive. As someone else has said, Brand New. Also, Envy on the Coast. Even though the latter most has broken up, they still have really good music.

Alternatively, just type alternative into the box during radio mode on Last.fm...

I'd say work your way through Killing Joke's discography. They've been around since 1978 with their latest release being 2010 so you have quite a lot of music to listen to. They originally started off as one of the many post-punk acts of the late '70's, however their music always leaned more towards the growing Gothic rock scene. Their influence can be seen in pretty much any major band from the '90's, with Nirvana going so far as to rip off the main riff in their song "Come As You Are". To make the deal even better, while the members of Killing Joke are in their mid 50's, they still sound heavier and better than new bands with members in the 20's. Here's a selection of their songs that showcase their various genre changes over the last 30 years.

I hope you give them a chance :)
