Metropolis, one of the first big sci-fi films I think my teacher said, its a silent film. Its also one of the most expensive silent films made, as the wiki below states,(Then again *shrug* its wiki, as people say).

I've heard a lot of talk about this one. Having watched Nostalgia Critic and James Rolfe pine over German Expressionist type films. I've got to add this one to my list as well. I known that its said that in the Nightmare before Christmas movie by Tim Burton that a lot of the set design came from German Expressionist.

Yup!

"Metropolis features special effects and set designs that still impress modern audiences with their visual impact ? the film contains cinematic and thematic links to German Expressionism, though the architecture as portrayed in the film appears based on contemporary Modernism and Art Deco."- Quotes from wiki

Also maybe Blade Runner considering all the praise I've heard from this site bout it, I thought it was pretty good when I finally saw it.

Crap. Anytime I want to mention Moon, I've been ninja'd, which should be a testament to the greatness of the film.

Other than Moon, which I highly recommend, you should check out Apocalypse Now. The Redux version is much longer, but it's the version I saw. The acting is great, and the story is damn trippy at points. It's worth watching just for the bad ass that is Kilgore.

Eraserhead sounds...very disturbing but It seems like a must watch movie.

Moon seems very interesting, a more recent picture then I had expected but looks very good.

Edit: Just watched the cube trailer...also looks amazing.

Hey a Metropolis shout out! Awesome! I personally thought this movie is great but I would not recommend it if A) You think silent movies are passe and B) you don't mind some footage being lost forever. But still, it was one of the first Sci-Fi films and it is truly a marvel of its time. Beyond the anime of the same name, I would love to see a remake of it (but only if its outside the major production circle of Hollywood).

My personal recommendation: Superman. Bright and colorful, it is what Movie Bob wants comic books and comic books films to return to. It is evidence that you can make an upbeat, fun, and slightly cooky comic book movie and make it awesome.

Commando, Die Hard, and Die Hard 2. Why? Would you believe me if I said they represent the suffering of the human condition and they will make you question everything about yourself. No? In that case, they're the best classic action films. A movie doesn't need to be deep to be entertaining.

Don't forget to watch recent bests like District 9 and Black Swan :D, if you need to know why, just look to MovieBob's reviews of the two.

Oh and if you want a good documentary, I recommend Not yet Rated, its about how movies are rated and the...well I guess the conspiracy or shadiness behind it.

Citizen Kane reminded me of a lot of 1984, where it is still extremely relevant social commentary, but not the most entertaining experience.

Kane's 2nd and 3rd act just drags on, but I every time I think of one man's manipulation of the press or the fall of a good and noble man from grace, I think of this movie. Also, what Kane has going for is its a biopic of sorts for who was one of the most powerful men in media at that time, William Randolph Hertz. So much so that Hertz made it a mission to destroy and discredit Orson Welles for making the film.

See it if you liked the Social Network, which has many of the same themes.

Greetings Forum,

I'm just beginning my journey into the world of film making by enrolling for the fall semester at the local university for their "Digital Interactive Media" Bach program. It's basically a combination of Film, Web Programming, Graphic Design, and Video Editing.

While I'm very very in tune with the Graphic Design, Programming, and Editing portions of the course I feel I may be lacking depth in the film category. I of course have seen a lot of classic and popular films. Such as Star Wars, Evil Dead, and pretty much any big budget action or comic book film since 1980 however I feel I may have missed out on a lot of more Artsy pictures.

So what do you guys feel are absolute "Must see" films? (With great Cinematography, Writing, or really anything of value that an emerging film student must see.)

Also a side note to the question. Are Casablanca and Citizen Kane really all they are hyped up to be? Are they overrated?
I really recommend some films, such as Requiem for A Dream, All About Lily Chou Chou, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and some more films I cannot remember, but they may not be what you are looking for.
