So, my 3ds hasn't received a lot of love lately. Despite pouring over a hundred hours into Fire Emblem: Awakening, I haven't really touched it since. Since I have some money burning a hole in my pocket, I was debating whether I should buy Pokemon XY, a series I haven't touched in over a decade, Bravely Default, which is apparently getting all the praise, or a different 3ds title.

I prefer RPG's, or something with a decent story, but I'm open minded to anything. Are there any hidden gems on 3ds I need to try? Are Pokemon and BD really as good as people say? Why? What are your recommendations?

If you've never played a Monster Hunter game before, or even if you have and enjoyed one, I suggest Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. It's a hack 'n slash game with a lot of depth and you can pour a lot of time in it. It's very pick up and play, as quests can take a while, and failing them really feels defeating. However, it's fun to hunt the huge and awesome monsters. The only downside is that you have to through a couple hours of boring gathering quests, and hunting small monsters, before you get to the meat of the game. If you have some time, I suggest this game. The 3DS version only has local online, but Monster Hunter 4 is coming to the US next year, and that will have cooperative hunting. Look up some gameplay if you're curious. I didn't go into full detail.

I really can't recommend Pokemon X/Y enough. I would have to say that they are easily the best games in the series. If you've ever enjoyed Pokemon games, you should really look into it.

Devil Survivor Overclocked.

It's an Strategy RPG that takes place in modern day Tokyo. Demons overrun the city and you have to survive through seven days.

It has one of the best stories I've experienced in gaming, with multiple different endings, well written dialogue and characters, a fast-paced and fun mix of strategy and turn based gameplay and a Pokemon style monster collection system.

SMT IV definitely is worth playing. It's like Pokemon, except plot and no online play. A few other things are different about it, but you'll mostly be running in circles picking up new demons or grinding your current ones to set up powerful teams. Oh, and it also has legit moral choices, in that no matter what you choose, it's always wrong, just a different type of wrong.

Also, I'd say pick up the Kingdom Hearts game for it. Closest they've come to a full Kingdom Hearts game on a portable console, and definitely one of the better ones in the series.

Besides that I can't think much of what to get in terms of 3DS games, only regular DS games.

Bravely Default is an excellent, job system style Final Fantasy game under a different name. As said above, Shin Megami Tensei IV is a wonderfully dark game and Devil Survivor Overclocked had me tweaking my party's skill sets constantly. 3DS doesn't have the quantity of games I was promised, but quality? Yeah, it has that

Well OP since you seem to enjoy strategy games, I'd say:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy%27s_Ghost_Recon:_Shadow_Wars
http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Devil_Survivor_Overclocked

As far as good RPGs go on 3DS:

http://www.gamerankings.com/3ds/997793-etrian-odyssey-iv-legends-of-the-titan/index.html

http://www.gamerankings.com/3ds/635388-rune-factory-4/index.html

The 3DS is slowly but surely living up to the DS's "JRPG machine" legacy.

Harvest Moon: A New Beginning. I love Harvest Moon games, and I think they are always worth trying out. They are relaxing games, run a farm, help the community, raise animals, get married, have a kid. The story isn't really that big. You came to take over the farm your parents left, the town is in a bit of a state, you need to fix it up, have more people move in. But it does make you work hard for it. This one has the bonus of you can have the town however you like it, you can move shops, houses, plants around to suit how you want it to look. The people in town are pretty decent, they become more interesting as you develop your friendship with them. But hey, it's always fun to use imagination. In Harvest Moon for the wii my town was great. There was an axe wielding serial killer and a mayor who refused to acknowledge I married his son and that we had a child, he kept asking me who was taking me to the couples events. I was so hurt :( So I started giving him fish which he dislikes.

Rune Factory 4 will be great. I haven't played it (not released in the EU yet :'( ) but I can vouch for the series as a whole, and all of the games have been very brilliant. It's a fantasy Harvest Moon, but don't go thinking it's the same thing. Rune Factory is a lot more indepth RPG. It makes you work and work damn hard for everything. It gets increasingly difficult as you unlock more dungeons. You can make your own weapons, tools, armour. It's fantastic. But don't expect the game to tell you much, Rune Factory has always just put you in and pretty much pats you on the bum and sends you on your way. So be sure to have some reading ready. However how the people in town work is the same as Harvest Moon, you develop your relationship with them and you will unlock more things. Marriage requirements are a lot more challenging in Rune Factory than they are in Harvest Moon though.

Otherwise, all the other ones I can think of have been said. Oh and Luigi's Mansion 2 is pretty darn great too.

Link Between worlds is fantastic if you haven't played it yet. I would also recommend Pokemon as well, though the story in X and Y is pretty ridiculous, but the story is a small part of the fun a Pokemon game can provide. Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is pretty awesome too, definitely recommended.

Just a heads up if you didn't know this already but you can get pokemon X or Y for free if you haven't registered your 3DS already and buy one of 6 games for it:
http://club2.nintendo.com/3ds-pokemon-promo/

That way you might end up with two new games for your system instead of one.
Out of the six you would have to buy I've only played animal crossing: new leaf. Which I would recommend, but I know those types of games aren't for everyone.

Otherwise, a Zelda: A Link Between Worlds really is that good as is Luigi's Mansion.
Resident Evil: Revaluations is also really good and I would recommend that too.

I have heard good things about Bravely Default. Try out the demo, if you like that then you'll love the full game so I hear. It has a fantastic battle system and you can really customize your party with the extensive job mechanics.

I'm also a fan of Shin Megami Tensei IV. It's not easy, and it's a bit of a dungeon crawling RPG with first person battles. Apparently that's a turn-off for some people. I like the story, demon fusing, and exploration, and it's a good buy imo.

Not RPG but I love it anyways is Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I'm sure I don't have to explain what it is, but I do have to warn you: it is not a game where you play it for 4 hours at a time or try to unlock everything. It's more of a play for an hour at most every day, or a few minutes every other day. Lots of people have tried to capture every bug and fish immediately and burned out fast expecting instant gratification. Regardless it's a ton of fun and Whitney is the best villager hands down.

I wouldn't call it a "hidden" gem, but if you have any interest in RPGs you'd do well to pick up Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance if you haven't already. It's not the best in the Kingdom Hearts series by any means, (that honor would go to KH:Birth By Sleep) but it's nowhere near the worst.

With the DS, I went straight for Zeldas, Pokemons, Dragon Quests, Harvest Moons, etc. Then started collecting all the RPGs.

I'm getting a 3DS next year, & on my list is Fire Emblem, Bravely, & Adventure Time games.

Try Zero Escape series: 999 (it's on DS but you can play it with your 3DS) and Virtue's last reward. They're brilliant visual novels with a lot of twists, puzzles to solve and endings to find.
Inazuma Eleven 3, if you like soccer and RPG, this is a fun game you can play. It's less simulation (like FIFA) and more over-the-top with many characters to recruit.
Senran Kagura, it's a light-hearted fanservice hack and slash. I personally think it's pretty fun.

Definitely Overclocked. The best game on the 3DS, in my opinion. Another excellent titles are Pokemon X/Y, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and Bravely Default.

You should definitely get Virtue's Last Reward. It has a mindblowing story. Hell, probably one of the best story in gaming right after it's sister game 999 on DS. It has decent length too (it took me 37 hours to finish it).

I'm in the same boat as you OP (last 3DS game I've bought was LoZ: A Link between Worlds which supringly I didn't liked, it felt way too similar to A Link to the Past) as the only game I keep on playing are the Streetpass games (the extra you buy online).

In saying so I have preorder Professor Layton vs Pheonix Wright since I loved the Layton series.
