So ive recently finished the percy jackson books which i liked quite alot before that i read the death, city watch, and rincewind series of discworld novels. I quite like books with foreshadowing in and preferably not stupid villans or heros. Deconstructions are ok so long as the authour doesnt spend the entire book trying to make his point to the detriment of chacter development or plot
Glen Cook's Chronicles of the Black Company [http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Chronicles-of-the-Black-Company/Glen-Cook/e/9780765319234/?itm=10&USRI=glen+cook]. That's just the first 3 books, there are actually 10+ books in the series, all of them very good. Just read the customer reviews.

Also, his 'Instrumentalities of the Night' series, but is still in progress; if you like the 'fantasy private investigator' like the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, you'll like Cook's Garrett, PI files too. If you haven't read the Dresden Files, you should.

The Sprawl Trilogy [http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Neuromancer/William-Gibson/e/9780441569595/?itm=6&USRI=william+gibson] by William Gibson is, literally, the books that birthed the Cyberpunk genre.

DUDE! If you want a book series like that then I recommend to you "The Space Trilogy" written by C.S. Lewis

Great, series, intelligent and alot of action in the 2nd and 3rd books. Plus the series will indeed leave you shocked.

First book: Out of the Silent Planet
Second book: Perelandra
Third book: That hideous strength.

In what way?I've read the first 3 books and am planning on starting the fourth as soon as I finish what I'm reading at the moment. Can't say I've found them particularly depressing or soul crushing so far.

I found book one to be somewhat depressing due to the following...

The romance between Richard and Khalan that cannot happen due to Khalan being a Confessor. (Even though this is rectified at the end of the book.) That whole series of events just hit me hard because I have experienced something similar in my life. (Loving and longing for a woman I know that I can never be with.)

Artemis Fowl -- good book for all ages, most steps made by both sides are extremely thought out, imaginative.
Fantastic series!
I have them all on my iPhone + the audio books and graphic novels xD
I have read them all loads of times. Never gets boring when you have technologically advanced underground fairies and a 7ft bald bodyguard in the same book!

Quick question, is there more graphic novels? I have the graphic novel of the first book, and I want to know if there's more.

I suggest the Pendragon Series by D.J. Mchale
His writing isn't always the best but the stories get so dark when the books hit double digits its worth every page. It manages to never get boring by creating fast paced imaginative events or short descriptions of long periods of boring time. Plus its always made me laugh. The first book is called The Merchant of Death, its pretty short but its a good intro to the series.

His other short Trilogy is about tot release its second book, its called the Morpheus Road Trilogy. It takes place in the same universe but instead of Sci-fi and dimensions its all aboot ghosts.

Temeraire series, by Naomi Novik. Napoleon wars with dragons. Read it. Now!

Also, the Vlad Taltos books. Words cannot describe the awesomeness.

Only the first book and 'The Arctic Incident' are in graphic novel form at the moment unfortunately.

The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins for a really good darkish fiction
The Maze Runner soon to be trilogy by James Dashner. First book is The Maze Runner, Second is the Scorch Trials and the third is coming out October 2011 i THINK. The first book has a bi of a slow start, though.
and the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer

I'm not going to read all these cause I have little attention span so if these are repeats, I apologize.

The Elric Saga and anything by Darren Shan.
