Even though it can be hard to understand what's going on at times, I'd have to say Fooly Cooly cause of it's over-the-top fight scenes, fairly good character development, and "slight" sexual undertone.

At the behalf of lordlee and because it's awesome, watch Baccano dubbed. The first episode will confuse you, but I was hooked from the second episode thanks to Isaac and Miria.

Also, obligatory Nanoha A's (the second season) recommendation, me being the resident fanboy and all. As for the other seasons, the first one starts out cliche but gets awesome fairly late (for a 13-episode anime) and StrikerS kinda screwed the pacing over by being 26 episodes.

To Aru Majutsu no Index
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, a spin-off series starring Misaka, is also currently airing. Maybe you'll like that.
If he liked Index, I wouldn't recommend Railgun. Unless you liked Index for her loli factor, there isn't much to the Railgun series except Kuroko assaulting Mikoto.

GURREN LAGANN isn't on the list and SHOULD BE. Fate/Stay Night was also quite good.

The only running series I am really watching right now is Bleach (well, and Railgun for when I still cared)

Go to youtube and watch Jojo's bizarre adventure! (2000)

Hey, its no longer running, but its a great little one shot.

(Dreamcast game is pretty sweet too! Used the same engine (CPS3) as Street Fighter 3!)

Some other good animes I'd reccomend, (going completely off the ball!), is Akikan, To Love Ru, and Hayate the Combat Butler. (though, I admit, these sorts of animes are not usually to most people's tastes)

Maybe watch some Soul Eater and Needless too. I've only seen a little of them, but I was really getting into them.

Unfortunately, since I'm at uni, I don't want to risk watching the newer shows, so all of these are shows I've seen in the past.

EDIT: Don't be afriad of watching the classics neither. Ranma 1/2 was pretty fun to watch, and even though I've never watched it (want the DVD boxset, but its so darn expensive! :O ), Fist of the North Star has always kicked ass!

Preferably running anime.
Well, since you liked the "generic-story-fan-fest" that is "11eyes", I can safely recommend to you the following 2:

Omamori Himari - harem fan-fest just like 11eyes was.
Seikon no Qwaser - softcore porn disguised as an supernatural-action show, that for some unknown reason involves (read "rapes the canon of") Russian Orthodox church. (EDIT: I technically belong to RO, and that show is beyond wrong and offensive)

Now for something with a bit of decency and story:

Dance in the Vampire Bund - this one is actually good.
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun - You saw Index, you should already know.
Katanagatari - an hour-long episode once a month, alternative medieval Japan (read "samurais, ninjas, martial arts and swords ahoy!").
Seen every single one of those except for Katanagatari.

I could use a bit of help on this as well. I've seen a bit of anime for someone who really doesn't put a lot of time into sifting through it, but I'm looking for some stuff to watch that isn't the same typical teen-angst sort of stuff they broadcast on Adult Swim (although some of it is very good). Here's a list of the movies and series that I've seen and enjoyed.
NOTE: All titles are in English because I live in America and that's the language I speak.

Movies:

Akira
Appleseed (1988)
Ghost in the Shell
Wicked City
Ninja Scroll
Vampire Hunter D (1985)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Steamboy
Macross: The Movie
Grave of the Fireflies
Blood: The Last Vampire
Black Magic M-66

Series:

Record of Lodoss War (1990)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Full Metal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals
Orguss 2
Inu-Yasha
Samurai Champloo

Anime that I've seen that I DID NOT like:

Blue Gender
Excel Saga
Angel Cop
Ah! My Goddess
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight
X (officially the worst on my list)
Bleach
Trinity Blood
Code Geass
Death Note
Blood Plus

So yeah, anyone want to help me out?

If you can stomach pervasive blood and tits, Elfen Lied has one of the best plots in all of anime. And since I'm a really hard guy to please when it comes to anime, that says alot.

I'm primarily looking for stuff around the 80s-90s era. I missed out on a lot by not having a very high allowance when I was young.

I haven't had any interest in the newest stuff. Sora no woto, was a little to kawaii (lol) for me.

I enjoyed Needless (Action Comedy)though it relies heavily on panty shots, and cheap fighting show jokes. (it's basically a less hilarious Bo-bo-bo but more heavily GAR)

You should finish up the darker than black stuff, With Meteor of the Gemini, and the OVA's that have come out.

Bakemonagatari, And basically anything by Shaft if you don't mind strange art, colored screens, text, text, and text. (basically Zetsubou Sensei, and Maria-Holic)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan, as long as it's in japanese, preferabbly from a Fansubber, as Bandai destroyed it with mediocre translations and generally just being lazy.

I hate to say it. But I really Enjoyed Minami-Ke and it's 3 seasons. It's the story of 3 sisters than just takes the slice of life formula to the extreme, a Must if you enjoyed Lucky Stars humor.

And if you watched Index, Watch Railgun, though it adds nothing to the series. At all. Except more characters for Rail gun to not interact with, and instead just do her dumb stories, that are far less interesting.

Again almost none of the ones I suggested are currently running, and People have already suggested several of the other things I'd have suggested (Thank you people for NHK suggestions). Again, tastes differ and suggestions will differ, It looks like you've got a taste for Male leads and some action, so keep that in mind when you look up some stuff and keep it real homie.
