As far as books go, check out some H.P. Lovecraft. He's got a really unique, documentary-like blend of sci-fi and horror that really draws you in the more you read. Plus, all his stories are fairly short.
I recommend trying out
The Call of Cthulhu,
The Dunwich Horror,
At the Mountains of Madness,
The Shadow Over Innsmouth,
and
A Shadow Out of Time.

You will not be disappointed.
Love me some Lovecraft! Read the Neonomicon comic yet?

Cthuluhu mythos written by Alan FRAKKING Moore.

Warhammer 40K series. A very good Sci-fi theme game/books. A mix between fantasy and Sci-fi. Just check out the games (Dawn of War series) and or the book series (Which are a lot. Just don't read the ones written by C.S. Goto)

I don't know of any si-fi films but if you are interested in a good si-fi book then I would recomend anything written by Iain M Banks. I found The Use of Weapons in particular very enjoyable but again he is not exactly obscure.
Once I'm finished with the Mammoth Book of Mindblowing SF, I'm Going to be digging into the Xeelee Omnibus

Moon, it's with Sam Rockwell, you need patience for this one though.
I was legitimately angry that Rockwell didn't get an Oscar nomination out of that.

OT: District 9 was an excellent, fairly original sci-fi movie. Great direction, fantastic acting (the lead actor had never acted before and improvised most of his dialogue and was excellent). And if that doesn't do it for you, there is a lightning gun that makes people explode like water balloons full of red paint. Always fun =)

There's a good indie series called Pioneer One [http://vodo.net/pioneerone].
Thanks! Sounds interesting from the blurb, I'll get to watching it after season 2 of Gundam 00
:)

Moon and District 9 were both excellent and sit in my DVD collection not far from my favourite movie of all time; 2001 A Space Odyssey

2001 a space odyssey...may be a little boring a slow...but my god is it epic.

oh and everything relating to the original star trek series and the first 6 movies.
enemy mine
Titan AE (not great but Don Bluth has great animation)
heavy metal (has violence drugs and tits)
Heavy Metal 2000 (same reason as above but better animation)
Dune (not great but the book rocks)
and district 9.

avoid Avatar if you want bad science, writing, and characters.
avoid Halo legends, even as a halo fan i hate those shorts
avoid Transformers except for the original show and movie
avoid Masters of the universe
avoid tank girl
avoid the wing commander movie
avoid battlefield Earth which is considered to be one of the worst sci-fi movie ever.

I'd like to second both Moon and District 9. Two of my favorite sci-fi movies.

Am I late to the party?

I have only two suggestions for you, if you have not seen them.

Titan AE is the first, which you've seen many others bring up.

Fifth Element is the second. It's an extremely good movie.

And, on the side, if you want b-grade terrible but hilarious sci fi, check out Space Truckers.

what he said about 9 seasons with 2/3 movies worth it to buy it 2 rpgs worth of entertainment
Yeah the two SG-1 Movies are The Ark of Truth and Continuum. Then there is the original Movie Stargate.Plus there are five Seasons of Stargate Atlantis and two Seasons of Stargate Universe all of which are fantastic problem is it would cost a lot to get them all.

Ignoring anything beyond the last couple of years, I would say the two movies that I keep re-renting (to the point where I should just buy them on blu-ray) are:

Moon

Pandorum (I wish they would leave all the declensions of Pandora alone).

Yeah. Four Issues published by Avatar.

Read The Courtyard first Neonomicon is the sequel.

I'm hoping Guillieurmo Del Toro gets At The Mountains Of Madness off the ground.
The guy who did Hellboy 1+2 and Pan's Labyrinth with full artistic control over a H.P. Lovecraft story?

This. Makes. Me. Wet.

So yeah,
Quatermass
Alternative 3
anything by Nigel Kneale
Seen all the Quatermass it is possible to see (Some of the tapes were deleted by the BBC.)
Have you seen the extremely low budget remake of the Quatermass Experiment by the BBC?
About the only thing it's got going for it is that it's Quatermass and it's got David Tennant in it.
