Title says it.
After this thread: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.331060-What-horror-game-still-gives-you-nightmares#13445092
I noticed I hadn't played many horror games. So well...yeah... What do YOU think would be a good one?

If you have not played any of these then I suggest you do so now.

Amnesia The Dark Descent
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Condemned 2
Fatal Frame 2
Dead Space
Doom 3

There are a handful of others that are good as well.

Eternal Darkness is a bit dated, but I absolutely loved how it worked. So many times I was duped by the low sanity meter fucking with me and not my character...

That aside, Silent Hill is a great place to start. Any of them really...I love them all.

Most recently, dead space 1 and 2. Good stuff. Amnesia: Dark Descent gave me nightmares, I'll be honest.

You could try the game that started the survival horror genre, and play Resident Evil 1. However groundbreaking it was, though...it didn't really age well.

Or you could just stop kidding yourself and go play Skyrim.

It pleases Me so much that someone actually recommended Pathologic. Or more accurately, not many People have played it, let alone know much about it. *Salutes*

Amnesia: The Dark Descent -- scariest game I've played
System Shock (if you can handle the Doom era graphics. Also, use the mouselook mod. Just...do it.)
System Shock 2
Clive Barkers Undying -- a really fun, obscurish FPS from around 2001. Definitely worth a look.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Thief: The Dark Project/Deadly Shadows -- not all-out horror games, but they both have some insanely scary levels

My favorite of those is Thief: TDP, but they're all excellent.

Silent hill 2, I can only play it in small amounts, and I've played a lot of horror games, Dead Space 1/2 are hardly comparable but they have better gameplay.

System Shock 2 is pretty spooky and atmospheric. Don't know if it's classified as a 'horror game' per se, but it scared the shit out of me once or twice at least. :)

Limbo, though a puzzle/platformer game, is also quite creepy. That spider is especially unnerving :)

I've gotta suggest the Dead Space games and Amnesia: Dark Descent. Dead Space isn't as scary as some, but I really love those games. I only played a demo of Amnesia... but that doesn't change the fact that I friggin' love it. Probably gonna get it for Christmas this year >:3

Short answer? No, it is not available on Steam. There's not a lot for me to say without repeating other people's recommendations, many of which I myself have played and recommend as well. But if you do end up trying Amnesia: The Dark Descent and find it to be a fun experience, my recommendation would be to then move on to Frictional Games' earlier works, the Penumbra series.

Is this Pathologic game you people speak of available anywhere digitally?

My recommendations are basically everyone else's, but:
- Silent Hill 2
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent
- Penumbra: Overture and Penumbra: Black Plague (as atmopsheric as Amnesia)
- Condemned: Criminal Origins (more action-oriented than the others listed, but it's great)

Yep, you can, but not from Steam. Try Direct 2 Drive. Apparently it's gone up in price, but the developers are total bros, so I had no qualms with paying the $9.99 I did for it.

What, no one can reccomend Corpse Party?

Ah well, it just came out two weeks ago. Its very disturbing and has a Clock Tower feel to it gameplay wise.
