This, so, so incredibly hard. It's the scariest thing I'v ever played. I went through both Dead Space games like they were Kirby, but I had to put this mod off for months because it got too intense.

It's also very hard.

Finally, someone else who's played it!
For good reason; it's a great game.

Some others I'd recommend:

- Silent Hill 1-4 (2 in particular. Best game ever.)
- Rule of Rose (well, good luck finding it...)
- Siren 2
- Alan Wake
- Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
- The Penumbra Series
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent
- The Suffering
- Haunting Ground
- Curse: The Eye of Isis
- Gregory Horror Show (more of a comedic/cartoony horror game, but can get surprisingly intense.)
- Obscure
- Fatal Frame (all of them.)
- Eternal Darkness
- Parasite Eve
- Martial Gothic: Unification

can you still buy pathologic? if so is it on steam?
It's not on Steam (as you were told), but you can try a free demo here: http://www.gamespot.com/pathologic/onlive/platform/pc?tag=onlive&subsec=cc

It can be bought from the same OnLive service you need to run the demo.

It pleases Me so much that someone actually recommended Pathologic. Or more accurately, not many People have played it, let alone know much about it. *Salutes*
Maybe you can help me out. I've tried booting up Pathologic twice now. I can't get through more than an hour without quitting out of boredom. I like retro games and odd games in general, but this one was impossible for me to enjoy. Am I missing something? What really made this game for you?

Amnesia and the Penumbra series take the cookie! Frictional have nailed Survival Horror and their games will have you on the edge of your seat with suspense. They did for me, anyway...

My thread inspired another one. YAY! Where and what is Pathologic. Also Fatal Frame 1 & 2 were both really awesomes especially when you played them on Xbox because on 2 you get an actually good ending. which the PS2 version did not have. Silent Hill is still a wonderful series which I fully enjoy despite what a lot of people say. Clock Tower 3 is good but only as a once through because replay makes it far more difficult on your character to fight and hide. I like Gallerians and Gallerians: Ash. both were super awesome.

Rule of Rose, one of the best unknown PS2 games to be made.

You can buy it via OnLive, and there's a free demo there as well. I'll be trying it out ASAP because the reading I'm doing is really, really selling me on it.

But let me warn you that if you can't tolerate bugs and brokenness, don't even try this. It is a technological travesty, and, in places, very badly translated from the original Russian.

Oh my god. I totally forgot Haunting Ground! And you have an awesome selection recommend. I haven't played many others of the luist you've given but the vast majority you have listed are some prime horror games.

Ah, that issue. The thing You have to realise is, Pathologic is not a nice game. It will literally kill you if you loiter too long trying to figure everything out, and it will NOT hold your hand whilst you do. Right now, youre in a rutt comprised of "What the hell am i meant to be doing". What you dont realise is, that if you know what to do, youre constantly doing things throughout the town. And then, some events are on a timer before they stop being possible. You may have completely screwed yourself by hanging around for too long. My advice is to wait for a while ingame until the... Problems... start, and enjoy watching the death and misery. Then Restart and maybe get a walkthrough if you need it. Pathologic is non-linear and always plays a bit different though.

I haven't seen Scratches mentioned yet, so, Scratches.
I honestly believe it has the strongest narrative of any horror game, asides from, maybe Silent Hill 2 (occasionally awkward dialogue aside). I simply don't want to spoil things, but, after you've played the game there are several ways to interpret what happened. That and, if you can look past dated visuals it has perhaps one of the most terrifying conclusions to a horror game I've witnessed.
Mind, if you don't enjoy adventure games give this one a pass. Even if you don't, look into this game, if the game piques your curiosity then download it right away, I believe it's rather cheap on Steam.

Also, if you wind up enjoying Scratches, give the Dark Fall games a look.

Eternal Darkness for a good mind fuck, Amnesia: The Dark decent if you want to be scared, do not take the lack of eloquence in that last statement as me not being serious, if you play Amnesia, do it with some good headphones, in a dark room, with no distractions, you will have nightmares

What, no one can reccomend Corpse Party?

Ah well, it just came out two weeks ago. Its very disturbing and has a Clock Tower feel to it gameplay wise.
don't bother with it imo, go read the manga instead.
corpse party for psp has flat out horrible game-play:
-you can't skip the texts, even though you'll need to repeat a lot of stuff if you don't use a guide or tips
-to vague when you haven't completed a requirement, chapter 1 or 2 literally requires that you read a text of a which 2 nearby things state you need to avoid reading it at all costs.
-Many of the game overs are triggered by something in the start of a chapter or a wrong decision, but you often get a bad end at where you'd normally have the end of the chapter instead..
-some of the bad ends are literally black screens with just some text that doesn't tell anything extra... (just sounds typed out of people dying..)

it's a shame cause the story and the sound are quite good.

excuse my side rant a bit ^^, more on topic i'd definitely recommend:
Eternal Darkness
Silent Hill 1-4 and possibly shattered memories, but that's way less creepy and a different vibe then the usual silent hills.
Cryostasis, Sleep of reason

The original Dead Space for sure. As I stated [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/9.331060.13446341] in the aforementioned thread, the original game had a very creepy atmosphere. I wasn't really scared of the second game until Chapter 10 when you return to the Ishimura, which at theat point I preceded to shit my pants in terror at the familiar gun-metal grey corridors.

So yeah, the first Dead Space game is where the scares are at. For me at least.
