Band: Death
Album: Sound of Perseverance
Release Date: September 15 1998
Genre: Progressive Death Metal
Rating (1-10): 10

Probably Death's most progressive album and Chuck Schuldiner's swansong. Brilliant album with songs to suit anybody while still retaining that Death Metal feel. Any Death Metal fan should check this out if they haven't already.

Band-Marilyn Manson
Album-Eat me,Drink me
Release Date-June 5,2007
Genre-Alternative Rock
Rating-8.5/10
Reason-Very Different from MMs other albums. Slower and more emotional. I would have given it a higher rating but for some reason there are two techno remixes of one of the songs at the end of the album which really arent that good. The best song(in my opinion) is either Putting Holes in Happiness or Just a Car Crash Away

Band: Gang of Four
Album: Entertainment
Genre: Punk
Rating (1-10): 10
Why you chose to recommend this album: One of the last really good punk albums, sadly nowadays people think punk is about wearing make-up and questioning the government because it's hip. Real punk (Buzzcocks, Gang of Four, Clash) is about questioning society because there are problems

Band: Mindless Self Indulgence
Album: You'll Rebel to Anything
Release Date: 2005
Genre: Electronica/Punk/Industrial
Rating: 8/10

The best way to describe this album is addicting. Every song has the potential of ingraining itself into your subconscious whether you like it or not. Humor abound but many of deep messages as well. Lots of vocal talent and great lyrical work , though if you like musicianship it leaves more to be desired as heavy electronic loops and synthesizers are equally respected as the guitars musicians themselfs for this band.
Disregard that, Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy is Mindless Self Indulgence's best work. Go for that album instead.

Artist - Regina Spektor
Album - Begin To Hope
Release date... unsure
Genre - Quirky?
Rating - 8.5/10

I loved this album. Regina uses her voice like an instrument, in many different and interesting ways. Plus she's a beautiful and expressive song writed. Also her songs are a medley of different styles.

Band: Kamelot
Album: Ghost Opera
Release Date: June 5, 2007
Genre: Power/Symphonic Metal
Rating (1-10): 9/10

Kamelot is one of metal's most unique, influential, and prestigious acts to come along in decades. Their music is amazing ranging from their vocals to keyboards. Wide variety in range of songs on the album, and a few guest appearances, the most notable being Simone Simons from Epica. I wish I could describe this better, but it is too much for me to contain in words, to be honest.

Band: Can
Album: Ege Bamyasi
Release Date: 1972
Genre: German Krautrock (experimantal rock with jazz influences)
Rating (1-10): 9.5
Why you chose to recommend this album: As far as the German Krautrock movement (late 60's early 70's) there is no other band or album that better defines it than this gem here. Everyone who listens to this album for the first time is immediately entranced by it's sheer oddness and because you can't help but notice how funky these songs are (in a very strange and groovy way). And, as experimental as it is, it is also very accessible because the tunes are really catchy.

Band: Barenaked Ladies
Album: Everything for Everyone
Release Date: 2002, pretty sure
Genre: Hard SoftRock
Rating (1-10): 9
Why you chose to recommend this album:
BNL writes songs that might not be the biggest hits, but they have wise lyrics and are very replayable, most notably "Pinch Me" and "Another Postcard". It's great music to relax to and also jam to, thus the Hard SoftRock genre.
Fun Fact: On every album, there's 3-4 songs at the end recorded acoustically and naked. The tradition started when the band was stressed out during the process of producing their first album, "Gordon", so their producer reccomended they record a few tracks in the buff.

Band: The New Pornographers
Album: Twin Cinema
Genre: Indie Rock/Pop
Rating: 9/10

Probably the premier album by one of Canada's best Indie Rock collaborations. Joining together the stellar talent of Danny Bejar (Destroyer), Neko Case and Carl Newman, Twin Cinema presents a stronger sound with a clearer direction than the bands previous endeavors and puts forward some awesome Rock, Power Pop and sometimes just plain weird tracks. The albums highlight are the brilliant tracks "Use It" and "Bleeding Heart Show" both of which well convey the New Pornographers musical styling. Basically if you like Strong Vocal Harmony's backed by awesome drums, great guitar and some more eclectic musical arrangement, you'll like this album.

Band: At The Drive-In
Album: Relationship of Command
Release: 12 September 2008
Genre: Post-Punk/Post-Hardcore
Rating: 10/10
Reason: First 'real' album I ever bought and still one of my favourites. Incredibly densely layered but not forgetting how to kick some arse. Admittedly it'll sound rubbish the first time you hear it but you back to it and it's amazing.

PS. OP I like the idea of the formula, I will be returning to this at home for some 'purchases' over the internet.

i agree wholeheartedly with this statement...also add Mars Volta to the mix...

Band: Cake
Album: Comfort Eagle
Genre: Geek rock or something.
Rating: 9/10

It's just friggin' awesome. Kinda laid back rock with a funkier bassline and trumpets. And somehow it manages to sound cool.

Band: Paul Burch
Album: Last of my Kind
Release Date: April 24, 2001
Genre: Country Folk
Rating (1-10): 10

Yeah, I'm kind of a redneck, but of all the bluegrass albums I stumbled on this year, Paul Burch's album based on The Life of Jim has consistently blown me away. Whether it's the violence-loving Amos Glass ranting about murdering anyone who f***s with him, trying to grow up in the Depression, or accepting that the farmer's way of life has died, this album is full of gems. If you get one song off it, download 'Polio'. It's about a man visiting his Uncle whose been quarantined because of Polio on a mountain. Very simple song, very heartbreaking. It honestly still gets to me sometimes.

Band: The Velvet Underground
Album: The Velvet Underground And Nico
Release Date: March 1967
Genre: Art rock, experimental rock, protopunk
Rating (1-10): 10
Why you chose to recommend this album: Well it's just about the most influential (not to mention best) album EVARRRRR. Not to mention that every single track on it is just perfect.

Band: Pubic Enemy
Album: It Takes A Nation Of Milions To Hold Us Back
Release Date:
Genre: old skool hip hop
Rating (1-10): 10
Why you chose to recommend this album: Well unfortunately NME says it better than I could "...the greatest hip-hop album ever....this wasn't merely a sonic triumph. This was also where Chuck wrote a fistful of lyrics that promoted him to the position of foremost commentator/documentor of life in the underbelly of the USA."

Band: Kataklysm
Release: somewhere in 2008
Genre: Death metal
Rating: 9/10
Why?:
If you compare this with some of their earlier work, you just have to respect the group for the progress they made. First few albums were pretty shitty, then they got a new vocalist - from this point on they only got better with every album, this one being my favorite.
