Puella Magi Madoka Magica. A modern day classic, and a real genre changer.
I'm at episode 9 and although I like the background art and story as is, I hate the characters + the way they're drawn and how predictable some of it was to me.

But I gave it a shot so thank you haha it totally fits the description though!

I'll add Parasyte: The Maxim here, it's about a modern day Japan which gets infested with Parasytes, organisms that seem custom designed to hunt humans. They start off as tiny, get into a person's body and if they get to the brain they eat it and take over a person's body. They're as smart as humans too so they kinda set up their own little communities and hunting zones. The main character is a guy who got infected with one but it never made it further than his right arm before it matured so he has zero control of his right arm and it can talk and use extremely lethal blade attacks.

It's psychological horror with plenty of action, it ends up as a story about how humans are actually the real monsters and shit (I think) but against the terrifying shit the Parasytes can do I think that line of reasoning is just bad. It's shown that a decent mid-tier Parasyte can clear a room of average humans even if they have swords and guns and they have an insect like mindset with practically no empathy. Then it tries some environmental commentary over the last 2 episodes and it kinda turned me off on it. Great series though.

Thanks for reminding me of Liar Game too OP, I wonder how much further they got after that massive hiatus it had a few years ago. I wish it got an anime.

Yeah I never got past Episode 4 of Madoka Magica. I mean it probably deserves all of the critical acclaim it got since it's a really unique deconstruction and subversion of your usual magical girl type anime and how being a magical girl is fucking awful not awesome. But after Episode 3 (you know the scene) I felt like I didn't need to see how the thing goes to have a good grasp on how it'll play out and what the message behind it is y'know? It would just depress me.

Like how I dropped Clannad Afterstory around Episode 15 cuz I just know the devs were on a mission to make all of the characters we've built up to care about just as miserable as possible and I don't sign up for depressing shit willingly.

Baccano. Really hard to describe, but really damned good.
If I may? Three stories being told at once, set in 1930s America and focusing principally on lovable rogues, mobsters, alchemists (closer to Isaac Newton than Edward Elric), and the characters surrounding them, unwittingly united by <Redacted. Spoilers>. Half the adventure is discovering how they relate to one another. And seriously, give it a watch. It's loads of fun.

If you do decide to watch it, give serious consideration to the watching the English dub. It's actually really good and adds to the setting rather than just being a convenience.

The lack of any mention of Lone Wolf and Cub in this thread Saddens me :(

What is Lone Wolf and Cub to the first timers? It is the ultimate Samurai story of all time. It is the most historically accurate representation of Edo Period Japan.

It is an Epic, it is thrilling, it is tear inducing at times. The ending is perfect.
