Ignore the current gen games man. Old school all the way! Star Control 2 is incredible and freeware/opensource. Planescape: Torment is amazing. Fallout 2 is awesome. Monkey Island is the funniest game (subjective) you'll play. The only problem is finding these games; very unlikely you'll see them in stores.

Edit: Actually Monkey Island has remakes available on Steam so that is easy to find. As well as Fallout 2. So the only hard one to find would be Planescape now that I think about it.

Don't think this one has been mentioned yet... but Prototype is a great game. It's so much fun free running and gliding throughout Manhattan that I've spent more time doing challenges, and just freerunning/gliding than I have doing missions.

The Orange Box is an awsome game to get if you do not have it already. I know it is for PS3 and X-Box, and maybe for PC. It has Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fotress 2.
The Orange Box was built for PC and then ported to the consoles.

But get it on PC, it's much better, plus TF2 has the updates. Although for the next month, most servers will be filled with Engineers.

I'd recommend anything by Introversion software (Darwinia, Uplink and Defcon). All of them are dirt cheap on Steam and Uplink and Darwinia have package deals. Also, the original Deus Ex. Yes, it looks dated and you have to think about playing it in a slightly different style to other FPSs, but once you get past that, the game is amasing. And on realism, half the time you will die if you get shot point blank.

Try going through games that you never had time to play. Most games released one or two years ago have gone down to way more affordable prices, but are still as good.

Or try browsing through Steam/XBLA/PS store for cheap downloadable gems. I can recomend Audiosurf off Steam and though it didn't grab me the way it grabbed others, I still think you should check out Psychonauts on XBL.

Check out some of the downloadable games, they're certainly worth a look. I can only really speak for the XBLA though.

Check out:

Geometry Wars 2: Retro Evolved
Castle Crashers
The Monkey Islands
The retro Sonics (replayed a few of them recently. Good fun!)
Banjo Kazooie/Tooie

Get a Playstation 2 and get the Timesplitters games.

This is an order.
those games are soooooo good. I remember finding Timesplitters 2 for like $13 bucks for the gamecube at a walmart back in the day, and i had never heard of it so i bought it to give it a try. Funnest shooter for its time, funny characters, cool maps, all those challenges, such a good game. Then my friend bought the 3rd when it came out...Even better then the 2nd. I just hope that they solve the whole problem blocking the creation of Timesplitters 4

If your looking for a nice epic, and have a PC that can support it I'd advise Dragon Age if you haven't played it already, and if you don't have a steriod fueled PC the xbox verison is good too. For a good shooter I'd give Bad COmpany 2 a go if you haven't played it yet, I had a lot of fun with just the campaign, and from what I know the online is good too.

System Shock 2 for PC. I suggest finding a copy on Amazon or Ebay, or downloading a turrent for it, but it would work on older computers, now newer ones.

Or else, Deus Ex too.
