I honestly have no clue.

I don't really know enough about the Japanese mindset to distinguish between something meant for girls and something meant for adult women.

Thats a new one on me. I have never heard of Josei. I can't help you. If you want any Shoujo or Shounen then I can help you but otherwise good look.

I honestly did not know there were any Josei anime, you might want to try asking at an anime forum.
Seems like you're all in the right place to change that. Maybe you could stick around and see if there was anything you'd like to try?

I read that the anime Shirokuma Café is class as Josei anime. I find that show very relaxing to watch after I come back from work. Anyway here is the trailer-

To sum it up, in that world most animals can talk and work alongside human despite there's a zoo which the animals work there. The show itself pretty much revolve around Panda (the main character) as he hand with Penguin and Polar Bear in his cafe Polar Bear Cafe. It's pretty much a slice of life type of show but it quite funny at times and also very cute if you like Panda.
I like it! Thanks. Even the ending credit sequence is pretty neat.

I just have to recommend Honey and clover
http://myanimelist.net/anime/16/Honey_and_Clover

It's a perfect blend of romance, comedy and drama
and furthermore, imho, it excels in all those categories

As it is set in the years of collage and job hunts it also comes around as somewhat more mature
not in a bad way though, since when has growing up been a boring thing?! =)

hm, reading OP, 'less romance fixated'.. and here I thought it was all about the romance, oh well
btw, searching for josei on MAL
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?genre[0]=43&q=&tag=&sm=0&sd=0&em=0&ed=0&c[0]=a&c[1]=b&c[2]=c&show=0

Let me throw in something else then

Mushishi
while not directly tied to the josei genre it isn't tied to seinen either
to my defence it is a recommendation for those who liked Pet shop of horrors
http://myanimelist.net/anime/457/Mushishi

Well anyway, hope you'll find something to suite your taste =)

Kuragehime? No idea, quite frankly. I'm well aware of the term but I've always thought of it as very wishy-washy, just like seinen. Whereas both shounen and shoujou works have distinct themes and art styles the former is just.. stuff aimed at adults, which is infinitely diverse. I could imagine josei being centered around more mature romance but you specifically excluded that theme.

If you're looking for anime to watch you'd have much more success in finding works of interest if you listed actual genres and/or themes you're looking for instead of 'general stuff for adult women', I feel. At least I'd actually be able to offer some suggestions this way.

Eh... most of the titles I was thinking of have already been mentioned, but I will second this...

I can HIGHLY recommend Nodame Cantabile. Personally it's my favorite anime of all time and it's josei.

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Music

And no, it's not the usual obnoxious romance you usually find in shounen (and even some shoujo) anime. Also, the romance is not the main theme of the show, so don't worry about that, if you're not too much into romance in anime. :)

!!

The soundtrack to the anime (both Classical excerpts and original) are really good too. Awesome series, though the step up in production values from the first to second series leaves you a bit ... o_O' upon rewatching it.

looks like Josei is shoujo without all the cuteness, I like the cuteness
